I guess we just have a different definition of exceptional.
All I've been trying to say is there are tons of bands like them. This doesn't make them a bad band, but there's nothing original about them. Which, again, doesn't necessarily make them bad. I just prefer a band who can provide a new take on what they're feeding on. And I'm not saying liking the Strokes means having low standards; my reply was to no such comment. I am just against the idea of lowering standards for popular music overall, because I feel that most of it is already completely talentless on behalf of the "artist" and "manufactured into an image", as you say.
Yes, the Strokes can play instruments and write songs (what a novel concept for a band), but they're manufactured into an image just like every other pop band. And I'm stressing the term "pop" because there's not usually a problem with any of this in other music (i.e. stuff that isn't on the radio, MTV, etc....basically being manufactured and fed to the mass market).
