The Strokes

their new album don't seem to be going down to well, with anyone excpet nme, who you know, are hardly likely to ever say anything bad about them...
i mean, its not bad, nick is great obviously, jules sounds a bit dodgy half the time.
am excited though, am seein them in a few weeks...should be awesome, and at least if theyre sh*t theyll be hot guys in the audience

I really do like a lot of the songs on First Impressions, but I see the thing about lack of passion...then again, you know, Jules has always had a bored drawling sort of voice, that's just how it's always been, and I'm not sure that necessarily means something more. What does really concern me is that a lot of the lyrics seem to point to this being their last CD, and to end on a...well...not exactly ITI-caliber album would be horrible. Nevermind just the thought of no more Strokes in and of itself!!!

I am still hesitating on wether or not I should buy their new CD or just save my money for something better...

The problem with the Strokes and other similar bands is this (a step by step guide on how to fail badly as a so called indie rock star):

1) They start out as nobodies doing really cool garage rock with insane references to older rock bands... But nobody really knows them.

2) They have their first CD out... NME and other critics hail them as the hottest rock act of the year/month or whatever .....

3) They think they are super cool and have tons of groupies after them and success gets to their head.

4) Their second CD comes out and it is much more commercial. Success has obviously gotten to their heads. They hire stylists and try their best at looking really really cool to hide the fact that their music has gotten quite terrible....

5) You don't hear much about them until their 3rd CD comes out. Now they are super known and a lot more "mainstream" people know them. The 3rd CD is SUPER commercial and catchy. They hire in SUPER stylists to try to improve their style even more to hide the fact that their music has gotten SUPER terrible.

6) Game over. the End.

Amen.
Definatley how the cookie crumbles.
Its the worst when the CAN hide the fact that their music is going downhill under the stylists and the commercial success etc.

Saying that..I dont MIND there new album , yes its not the best but i find it listenable (if thats a word) lol.
:innocent:

The best Strokes' songs ever:

- Modern Age
- Is this It?
- Last Nite
- New York City Cops
- Hard to Explain

That's like their all time top 5 songs.... according to me.. Sad to hear their 3rd album is bad.... I heard critics saying that the writing has gotten better and so does the use of instruments..... but the melody and arrangements is just terrible.....

I really miss the raw effect of Jules' voice like it's over the phone, now it's just too pure and clean... I won't buy their third CD... :(

I bought the new album today..(on sale of course) we'll see how it goes
 = somewhat skeptical

Thanks for posting that Shess0m0ney! I love reading any interviews about them! :D
I love so many of their songs from all their albums it's almost embarrassing. Seriously when I first heard the songs from "Is This It" I thought "OMG this is what I've been looking for!" Their music suits me down to the ground and I would be very upset if the band didn't last.

i actually bought FIOE but the cd store guy didn't put the disc in :( i'll have to go back. i heard a horrible track from it called 'electric lanscape' ugh. to be honest ROF was a major letdown for me but i don't know what i was expecting. there are a few some good tracks on there though. ISI will still rank highly in my favourite albums of all time though ;)

OK but you've listed half of This Is It

my choices are:
Barely Legal from the EP
and Trying Your Luck

obviously The Modern Age on (album version) was perfect

Automatic Stop was pretty good on ROF:blush:

And the lyrics from this album are pretty funny, Jules taking the piss:lol:

I'll wait for the Divorce album for any further moments of genius :ninja:

Ooh my Top 5 Strokes songs

1. Reptilia
2. The Modern Age
3. Alone, Together
4. Hard To Explain
5. 12:51

Those songs can do no wrong in my book! ^_^

On FIOE I think that Julian's writing of the instruments especially the solo's and drum beats has really come to a whole new level, but the song writing is just lazy.
You can't expect to make a decent album when you make the instruments better with huge amounts of effort, and then just use half hearted lyrics. Alot of the songs on FIOE. I just don't think he really believes in what he's singing.

1) Barely Legal
2) Alone, Together
3) Automatic Stop
4) The Modern Age
5) You Only Live Once

(sorry...I love Room On Fire, but Is This It has my all-time favorites)

Divorce? You seem pretty confident! Why do I keep hearing rumours he was bribed to marry Juliet and that it won't last etc? I'm curious. Did they have a kid or something?

After reading that interview it does sound like the band may have a few probs, mostly coming from Julian. But it sounds like he works so hard on their music, like obsessively. So obviously their music means A LOT to him so fingers crossed the band won't split any time soon!

I had to laugh when they were writing off those well known American bands  I agree whole heartedly! (i.e Simple Plan :yuk: ) And was very shocked to hear Nikolai likes You Am I (the Aussie band which is no more) I thought they were way too unknown!

Bleh. I really can't stand when people act snobbish about indie/mainstream. Bands evolve. It DOES bother me when the bands diss their first CD, though.

And I don't know about other peoples' locations, but here in the US, The Strokes were pretty popular with Is This It...I remember them being on MTV along with the wave of "The" bands: Vines, Hives, White Stripes... Although I think of them and the Vines the best of that bunch :).

That being said, I don't like FIOE as much as their first cd, but it's good in a different way. I miss the fuzzy, simple and happy sound of Is This It, but I'm not going to stop being a fan just because of that ;).

Oh, and Strokes on SNL next week. (They were on it before--shush it!)

I personally think First Impressions of Earth is their best album!

The Strokes were the support act for You Am I in 2001 (i think), in the thanks section for Is This It You Am I were thanked... but You Am I are still together as i'm pretty sure they've been recording an album for release this year

I think the Strokes will make it even bigger soon.... Over here their CD made the most sales at HMV last week. :ninja:
