Tom Ford F/W 2023.24 New York

They had a party with his team earlier this months and some people from the team left so I knew something was up…

He had a good ride and will forever and ever be one of my all time favorite designers. We lost Azzedine, Karl and now, in others circumstances, Tom.

I actually think that this is clever. His farewell Gucci collection wasn’t my favorite of his but I think this farewell, while more quiet is probably my favorite.
This curation actually shows that despite the bumps in the road, he always had a clear vision of his womenswear and even if some people were too into the nostalgia of his Gucci / YSL days, he has actually found a way to create a separate DNA for his work at his own brand.

‘These are very special clothes, very bold clothes, full of exuberance and joy, a certain idea of glamour and sexiness. He was as good in daywear during the first part of his career as he was with eveningwear at his own brand.

While his clothes were less present in the fashion landscape, there were definitely in pop culture.

I converted my husband to Tom Ford menswear 8 years ago but his clothes have always been part of my adult life. I really enjoyed his womenswear from a personal level even more than for pure fashion…

He has made history, is now maybe a legend in fashion bigger than some his contemporaries and even before him. He has created a strong brand in less than 20 years and has an unprecedented legacy in fashion.
I hope that Estée Lauder will treat this brand like the jewel it is..

Goodbye Mr. Ford!

aww Man imma about to cry :smilingwtear::sleepy: no more Tom Ford! but change is good, been watching him since I was 15, since 1999 saw him on fashion files. He really did good for his self, managed a lot of up and down. what a ride to watch. He will be a blue print for many young people! what a joy to have followed him for so long.

Wow. I kind of want to throw up as it is surreal he is exiting fashion AGAIN. When he left Gucci, that hurt in a different way because at least we knew he’d continue in fashion. But now, he’s retired ! We all knew it was coming and I think it is time, but still it doesn’t make it feel any less weird or painful. Tom is not only a hero to me in his professional life, but in a way his personal life story feels just like mine and in a weird I’ve modeled myself after him. I love him so much and am excited for him to relax with his billions. I wish him the best !

OH man this was so nice of you, he a legend right up there with Karl and YSL

Azzedine, Karl, Tom and Nicolas are among the designers that helped me shape my eye, figure out my feminity when starting working in fashion at 15 as a black woman. And as for Tom, I owe him my former career in fashion.
A lot can be said about his work but he is a legend indeed.

IMO it started going downhill when he began doing shows again. I know it's impossible in this desperately clickbaity day and age, but it would've been incredible if he just continued with those "intimate" presentations/lookbooks and kept things rarefied and exclusive and sort of pared down. Debuting that white cape dress on Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars was a thousand times more memorable and impactful of a fashion "moment" than any of the overblown catwalk shows with cheesy soundtrack cues and nightmarishly over-the-top styling he'd been increasingly fond of over the last several years. Then again, not keeping things so rarefied and exclusive led to him now netting billions, so what do I know?

I mean toms own line never lived up to the hype. He knew it too - the handbags went from using real croc to embossed croc. The handbag line has the smallest shelf at the Neiman in palm beach county.

Looking at his “greatest hits” - not so great. I totally forgot about the corny Molly dress….

tom said he was a stylist not a designer. Yea. Clearly his design teams at YSL and Gucci were doing the heavy lifting.

Considered i expected TF to be my go to brand I literally jave only bought a couple shoes from the early days. so many missteps at his own brand. That stupid penis cross made out of gold was pointless and really highlighted how Tom had no idea who his customer was. Producing ultra boring Hermes adjacent menswear with stupid stuff like that.

I think Tom lacked confidence. He has a strong aesthetic and a real confidence on his aesthetic but not so much in terms of strategy when coming back to fashion.

In a way it was impossible for him to not fail because people expected from him to come and rule the fashion world like he used to but nobody achieved that.

Maybe he felt that he needed to be part of the fashion conversation again and indeed the insane luxury and the decadence of his earlier collections turned into something less directional.

Hedi for example was never not confident in his aesthetic and strategy no matter how controversial his collections were at YSL or Celine.

I also think that the review of his SS2012 collection made them realize that small presentations allowed people to be in control of their narrative before them.

I’ve bought pieces from his first ever collections and tbh I have never been disappointed in terms of quality either in terms of design and execution but the shows styled by Carine and the sense that there was something heavy over his head made things a bit difficult to appreciate from a creative POV.

But the shows were great only because they invited a lot of clients. For such a small brand in terms of scale, it was great. I think he should have followed the path of Azzedine really…

‘But he has succeeded where Marc Jacobs or Michael Kors didn’t.

He has come full circle, doing windows again.
I just really hate the way he does it in those clips; women lit and shown behind glass, on a long dark alley, and a man passing-by. So obviously referencing red light districts and prostitution.
It's not the 70s anymore, those reference are not outrageous anymore, they don't hold any shocking value, they just look exploitative and dated.

Seriously it's like... everything about Tom is a bygone era. His partner was like 20 years older than him which was already a red flag. That creepy movie he made A Single Man, another red flag. It featured ancient out-dated views of being a gay man. The more we learned about Tomas the more creepy and perverse we found he was. He was also blithely unaware of how he came across.

The stupid perfume names really are too much for me to bear. Lost Cherry? In 2023?

The Tom Ford look is basically someone who works on Wall St but is into insane sick depravity behind the scenes, who the f*ck wants to look like that?

Now I see why Gucci let him go and didn't really seem to care so much. They obviously kept Tom under tight PR management and knew in 2004 what we know now. I also see why it took so long for TF to get backers for his own line. Again, I cannot believe Tom was unable to capture ME as a customer. Dsquared has managed their image better somehow.

It need not be said that his impact in fashion is immense. We had this coming but if still feels surreal to see the not so old guards leaving. I hope they’ll treat the brand properly, it’s one of those rare gems where its reputation far outsizes its reality.

So sad. But I will always cherish his work at Gucci and YSL.

90s wouldn´t have been the same without Tom Ford´s Guccimania. So many great fashion memories.

He started with Amber Valletta; and he finished with her as well. So beautiful!

Sorry if I didn't read lol but does it say what's next for him? Is it retirement?

I mean sooner or later this moment will come. I think it's good and appropriate for a farewell collection.

Looking back, you can see the evolution of his brand but also the consistency that he always maintains throughout the years.
I may not like some collections but he always understands his clients and delivered what they asking for.

It's a great way to close this chapter for his brand. It was a roller coaster of high and low. He achieved it all.

Wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.
