Toni Garrn on Victoria’s Secret, feminism and acting
German model Toni Garrn belongs to that brand of people who are really good looking, really smart and really nice.
She's a passionate philanthropist, serving as an ambassador for feminist campaign Because I Am A Girl which helps bring girls from around the world out of poverty. She's worked for fashion's biggest brands, from Calvin Klein and Prada to Dior and Versace. She plays the flute and the piano. She hangs out with Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn and Kendall Jenner. She used to date an Oscar-winning actor whose name rhymes with Theo.
All of this would be vaguely nauseating if she weren't such good company. We met with Toni on the day she became a work of art. She's been painted by esteemed artist Mike Dargas, known for his hyper realistic portraits, who was keen to capture Garrn's "expression". He covered her face in honey for the piece, not that she minded - in fact, she's now touting honey as a new face mask.
That's the thing about Garrn, she might look serene on the catwalk and in campaigns, but in reality she has more energy than Tigger.
"I have a pretty classic look, so people think I'm pretty calm but I'm the opposite - I can't sit still," she said, wriggling on her chair. "I'm hyper. I'm an external person, I'm not than internal at all."
Her endless energy might explain why she needs to be constantly busy. Even when she has a day off, she tries to educate herself. However, she's not about to go back to school any time soon.
"I get bored when I have time off and then end up signing up to online courses - things on global history or medical issues," she said. "I travel so much in those countries that I need to know the depth of what's going on - I don't want to throw money at the situation and it not do anything because there was an issue I didn't know about. I educate myself, but I haven't got the time or patience to enlist myself in a degree course. The world is my school."
Garrn is a feminist, which is why she started working for Because I Am A Girl back in 2014 - something she puts before modeling.
"I'm very much a girls' girl and a real feminist," she said. "I believe in female power and that the world would be a better place if we were all more equal. If women in those countries had a stronger standing, then those countries would do better."
Garrn also works for Victoria's Secret - the underwear empire which has been criticised for objectifying and devaluing women. Can you be a feminist and work for Victoria's Secret?
"I think Victoria's Secret gives off a very powerful view of women - models are hired because they look strong; because they look healthy, because they're proud of who they are - and that's an important message to send out," she asserts. "They don't look like your average catwalk model. The idea is, 'I worked very hard for this let me show it off.' No one gets on that catwalk and says, 'Here's me trying to be sexy'. They work hard. Like in any other job, you work hard and you show everyone what you've done. It takes a lot of work."
Garrn was scouted when she was 13 and scored her first Calvin Klein campaign when she was 15. She is refreshingly transparent when it comes to how hard she works out to achieve her athletic physique, citing running and yoga as well as more typical cardio exercises. In fact, Garrn is all about transparency. She loves the rise of social media because it allows models to show their personalities more than ever; giving them the chance to be much more than clothes horses.
"That's the way it always used to be," she mused. "Look at the original 90s supermodels - they became famous for their personas, as well as how they looked. I enjoy social media because I can show my personality, what I'm about and how I see the world. There is a negative to it - model scouts were way more important back in the day because they found talent but now clients just look at which girl has a big social media following."
Garrn is currently working on her first short film which she's written, produced and acted in. While she can't say too much about it yet, apparently, a well-known director approached her and she leapt at the chance.
Writer, actress, model, philanthropist, campaigner and feminist - it's no wonder that one of London's most in-demand artists has chosen Garrn as his new muse.
