Interview with Glamour UK (from their website)

Toni Garrn on Victoria’s Secret, feminism and acting

German model Toni Garrn belongs to that brand of people who are really good looking, really smart and really nice.

She's a passionate philanthropist, serving as an ambassador for feminist campaign Because I Am A Girl which helps bring girls from around the world out of poverty. She's worked for fashion's biggest brands, from Calvin Klein and Prada to Dior and Versace. She plays the flute and the piano. She hangs out with Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn and Kendall Jenner. She used to date an Oscar-winning actor whose name rhymes with Theo.

All of this would be vaguely nauseating if she weren't such good company. We met with Toni on the day she became a work of art. She's been painted by esteemed artist Mike Dargas, known for his hyper realistic portraits, who was keen to capture Garrn's "expression". He covered her face in honey for the piece, not that she minded - in fact, she's now touting honey as a new face mask.

That's the thing about Garrn, she might look serene on the catwalk and in campaigns, but in reality she has more energy than Tigger.

"I have a pretty classic look, so people think I'm pretty calm but I'm the opposite - I can't sit still," she said, wriggling on her chair. "I'm hyper. I'm an external person, I'm not than internal at all."

Her endless energy might explain why she needs to be constantly busy. Even when she has a day off, she tries to educate herself. However, she's not about to go back to school any time soon.

"I get bored when I have time off and then end up signing up to online courses - things on global history or medical issues," she said. "I travel so much in those countries that I need to know the depth of what's going on - I don't want to throw money at the situation and it not do anything because there was an issue I didn't know about. I educate myself, but I haven't got the time or patience to enlist myself in a degree course. The world is my school."

Garrn is a feminist, which is why she started working for Because I Am A Girl back in 2014 - something she puts before modeling.

"I'm very much a girls' girl and a real feminist," she said. "I believe in female power and that the world would be a better place if we were all more equal. If women in those countries had a stronger standing, then those countries would do better."

Garrn also works for Victoria's Secret - the underwear empire which has been criticised for objectifying and devaluing women. Can you be a feminist and work for Victoria's Secret?

"I think Victoria's Secret gives off a very powerful view of women - models are hired because they look strong; because they look healthy, because they're proud of who they are - and that's an important message to send out," she asserts. "They don't look like your average catwalk model. The idea is, 'I worked very hard for this let me show it off.' No one gets on that catwalk and says, 'Here's me trying to be sexy'. They work hard. Like in any other job, you work hard and you show everyone what you've done. It takes a lot of work."

Garrn was scouted when she was 13 and scored her first Calvin Klein campaign when she was 15. She is refreshingly transparent when it comes to how hard she works out to achieve her athletic physique, citing running and yoga as well as more typical cardio exercises. In fact, Garrn is all about transparency. She loves the rise of social media because it allows models to show their personalities more than ever; giving them the chance to be much more than clothes horses.

"That's the way it always used to be," she mused. "Look at the original 90s supermodels - they became famous for their personas, as well as how they looked. I enjoy social media because I can show my personality, what I'm about and how I see the world. There is a negative to it - model scouts were way more important back in the day because they found talent but now clients just look at which girl has a big social media following."

Garrn is currently working on her first short film which she's written, produced and acted in. While she can't say too much about it yet, apparently, a well-known director approached her and she leapt at the chance.

Writer, actress, model, philanthropist, campaigner and feminist - it's no wonder that one of London's most in-demand artists has chosen Garrn as his new muse.

Jolie March 2016
my translation

You were born in Hamburg. Are you still able to come home regularly?
I try to make it every two or three months. But it only works when I'm in Europe and have a couple of free days in between. I always look forward to a lot of sleep when coming home. Usually I don't get more than 5 hours. In Hamburg, it's a lot more quiet, I have good curtains and a very comfy bed by Ikea.

Do you still miss German food when you're out of the country?
Not the meat, I've never really liked it anyway. I have never had a Schnitzel, for example. Sounds weird, doesn't it? But I do miss things like Kaiserschmarrn or Germknödel. That is why I always convince my family to go skiing with me in Austria or Switzerland. They have the best food there. I always go skiing for like and hour, and then I'm off to the alp (Alm) to get some food.

Can you afford that as a top model?
I don't want to restrict too much when it comes to food. I've already cut out meat and dairy, which I'm intolerant to. And I try to stay away from sweets, but it is a daily battle. Let's put it like this: I eat five times a day and as healthy as possible.

Is all the hard work and discipline you need to get your body in shape though for you?
When it comes to food, yes, sometimes. With sports, not so much. That's because I travel a lot and therefore have to sit a lot. I just have to move in between.

What do your workouts look like?
It usually takes place in hotel gyms, I just travel so much. My trainer put together a program for me with exercises I know. Sometimes I do courses like Hot Yoga or Bootcamp. Have you tried it? You get yelled at in military style and are always under surveillance. That's perfect for me, I'm the kind of person who only does the exercise correctly when the trainer is standing next to me (laughs).

So you're always motivated?
My motivation is that I have to wear very little clothing quite often.

You've been in the business for 10 years. Is there a moment you would call your career highlight?
About 5 years ago I got to be the bride at Elie Saab's show. It was such an honor - and it boosted my career.

If you weren't a model, what would you be instead?

I don't know, I was discovered so early.... I don't know, maybe a dancer? I somehow have that in me. On set, I always jump around until the photographer tells me to please stop moving.

Did you take ballet classes as a kid?
No, but my mum took me to a classical dance school when I was seven. Waltz, Rumba, ChaCha, Samba, Salsa, Tango...I learned all of that, together with my brother. I quit at ten though. But I still remember the steps, that's why I sometimes start dancing around without noticing. But it's too late to do it for a living. But maybe I'll start again when I'm 40 (laughs).

You also appeared on TV. Could you imagine a TV career?
A TV appearance every once in a while certainly doesn't hurt. You can show what you stand for, and say a few sentences about it. Also, you can reach out to a much bigger crowd. But fashion is where I come from, and TV shows don't really have anything to do with fashion. It is pure entertainment for me.

A lot of models try to become actresses. Is this something you're interested in?
Actually I just shot a film, a thriller. It's not out yet, so I can't really talk about it. I just wanted to see if I liked acting. It was a lot of fun, but I think I'm too impatient. They always rebuild the set, or somebody's missing...and then you have to wait. I'm used to being somewhere else every day and to experiencing lots of different things. My life is very fast and not boring at all. I need that.

Finally, a very private question: What is your biggest quirk?
I don't like showering. Except for when I've been sweating. Sometimes I realize...oops, it's been two days without a shower, it's time again... (laughs)

Old but unseen, I think. It was taken during the charity dinner with Lagerfeld and Giabicomi in 2011 or so.

Interview for Elie Saab

Where do you keep your perfumes at home?
In Germany, I have ten beautiful fragrances all lined up in my bathroom, so I vary a lot in my perfume choice when home. I have two ELIE SAAB perfumes that Mr. Saab gave me that I love…

In New York, my apartment is a rental so I have perfumes lying around and I grab one to travel with. I always just travel with one.

Do you choose the perfume according to your trip?

I don’t even really think, I just take!

How do you apply it?
One here, one here [pointing to neck] and if my hair is open and dry, I shake my hair and spray. But if it’s wet – no way. It doesn’t work on wet hair.

I also like to put it on my scarf. If I don’t know what I’m wearing yet or if I’m going out for the whole day, I spray my scarf and I leave with it.

A lot or just enough to be known?
I don’t have a super dark woody taste nor a flowery taste. I’m somewhere in between so it’s never too much. But I love the idea of people actually being able to smell it.

Any early perfume memories?
My grandma used a lot of beautiful perfumes. Perfume is something that is so adult – as a kid you don’t know what it’s for. My grandma always smelled amazing, never too sweet.

For my mom, I remember thinking – mom, you smell amazing – because she never put perfume on, except at Christmas time. Now whenever I smell it, I always think of her.

That’s what I love about fragrance. It really makes you kind of…not recognize a person, but remember so many special things about them.
