UK Elle June 2024 : Little Simz by Ekua King

^ as are we

The green will pop, that's it

she looks so bored and so got I

I like the green, it’s unusual to see on a cover and I quite like the image, but her expression is indeed bored. Shame, it’s a nice choice for the cover star.

I get why an editor might not want to produce covers with positive expressions. It might be considered inane, part of an era where women were always smiling out from the front of magazines.

However, what's considered a success in this respect? Selling more issues of a magazine because the cover is appealing, or scoring a 'win' by going against that and... not selling as well?

I've noticed recently that Hearst is back to promoting those economy packs, with UK Bazaar and Elle bundled together. They wouldn't be the most natural of bedfellows, the maturity level is different.

If you wanted UK Bazaar and also got UK Elle, it would be like "bring your child to work" day.

I love that shade of green used for the backdrop, and the cover stands out immensely on the shelves because of it. However, the shot of Little Simz is so... weak and lifeless. Boring beyond belief, that I am once again questioning Kenya Hunt's ability to select the right cover shot.

Massively hoping British Elle improves now that Anne-Marie Curtis is back in the fold.
