Underrated Actors

I personally like christina ricci, edward furlong and edward norton. Especially edward norton, i loved him in american history x and the 25th hour.

To each their own, but what on Earth makes people think Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are actually talented actors? It doesn't matter to me if people like them, but usually those people do know that they aren't appreciated for their talent, but for their looks. Pitt and Cruise both know it and want it. They don't want to take interesting/risky roles, the most work they'll ever do for a role is working out and getting their hair done. There's nothing wrong in that, but they shouldn't be called actors as they quite clearly are not looking for it.

I actually think Pitt is talented. Cruise isn't, but Pitt has had some awesome roles in Legends of the Fall, Snatch, and Fight Club. Yea, he's done a ton of fluff, but so has Johnny Depp, for example, and I hold him in high regard.

On Ed Norton (also my fave), I don't think he's underrated, I think he's given proper credit. He just isn't appearing in many movies, which is most probably his choice.

Agree on Buscemi and Edward Furlong - awesome actors.

i dont understand how gael garcia is underrated really. he's certainly talented, but also picky with his roles and that's why he's not seen as much as we'd want to, if he'd do everything he's being offered, he'd definitely fit more in the overrated category as everyone thinks he's better than what he actually is.. i love him, but he's capable of some pretty crap performances. :innocent:

i'd add Tim Roth to the list. i'm not sure if he's been mentioned already but he's amazingly talented and hardly recognized.

I think Tom Cruise is underrated (I know he is very not done right now) His role in Magnolia was amazing. Overall I agree with you, people, I would also like to ad Diego Luna, he was amazing in Y tu mamá también, and Giovanni Ribisi, he is one of my favorites!

Tom Cruise is a decent actor. It's a shame about his public persona.

Gary Oldman
Edward Norton
Evan Rachel Wood

Philip Seymour Hoffman used to be....but not anymore, I suppose.

i agree w/ faust.
brad pitt is a gifted actor, he also happens to be very well-compensated for it.
he is able to slip into all sorts of roles
and often i forget i am watching brad pitt, because his characters rise above his own personal charisma and magnetism...

tim roth is great.
i was a big fan of philip seymour hoffman back before the capote craze (boogie nights, anyone?)
also mark ruffalo.
when i saw will smith in six degrees of separation, i couldn't understand what he was doing with the kind of roles he takes on these days...

Well I think Tom Cruise is not really in the same category as Brad Pitt. The only performance where Pitt was half decent was 12 Monkeys, Fight Club he wasn't too bad either, but that's it. Cruise on the other hand... To say Cruise doesn't want/take risky roles is just ignorant, IMO. Collateral, Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut. Those are all risky movies that not every movie star would be willing to do, especially one with Cruise's status. You don't see Will Smith or Denzel Washington doing anything like that, or Even Tom Hanks. How about Russell Crowe? That's partly why I think Cruise is underrated. Any other actor takes a role like that and it would be considered "risky", Cruise does it, and people don't see it.

Honestly, I think both Brad and Tom are very good actors.

As someone already noted, Brad's performances in Snatch and Fight Club were great. Though I'm not a fan of most of Tom's movies, (I hated Magnolia and Vanilla Sky) I think Tom was incredible in Collateral and Far and Away. But, when it comes to celebrities who consistently shell out great performances and aren't recognized, they aren't it, IMO.

I agree with Evan Rachel Wood. Great in Pretty Persuasion.

Vanilla Sky wasn't risky for Tom, he rewrote the role so that he wouldn't be as disfigured as in the original movie cause heaven forbid Tom looks ugly in a movie. The problem with Tom is even when he has a half decent movie, I only ever see Tom the movie star. Plus now the crazy off screen antics overshadow everything else. I fail to see how playing a hit man in Collateral was a risky movie for Tom.

I'm curious to see how Brad does in Babel alongside Cate B. I thought he was great in Seven, 12 monkeys, Fight Club and Legends of the Fall.

Clive Owen
Edward Norton
Tim Roth
Jim Carrey
Matt Dillon

thank you for reminding me of how convincing he was in 12 monkeys...
love that movie.

Cruise can act. To judge him based on his public personality is ridiculous. He has made some great movies.
