i'd add Tim Roth to the list. i'm not sure if he's been mentioned already but he's amazingly talented and hardly recognized.
Definatley!
others on my List - Michael Madson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Eccleston, Steve Buscemi, Gary Oldman and of course Ed Norton.

Alan Rickman.....he just so great and sexy......i wanna say daniel day lewis but he already hav an oscar. Alan haven't done something that big like" gangs of new york".

Cruise can act. To judge him based on his public personality is ridiculous. He has made some great movies.

I can judge him from that too, but I've discussed about acting here, therefore I have judged Cruise about his films, which I have unfortunately seen a lot. Sorry the strange phrasing.

Vanilla Sky wasn't risky for Tom, he rewrote the role so that he wouldn't be as disfigured as in the original movie cause heaven forbid Tom looks ugly in a movie. The problem with Tom is even when he has a half decent movie, I only ever see Tom the movie star. Plus now the crazy off screen antics overshadow everything else. I fail to see how playing a hit man in Collateral was a risky movie for Tom.

I'm curious to see how Brad does in Babel alongside Cate B. I thought he was great in Seven, 12 monkeys, Fight Club and Legends of the Fall.

Totally agree. How could I forget 7!!!!

I think Gabriel Byrne can be added to the underrated category - what an awesome actor.

I don't think Sean Penn is underrated, he's won LOADS of awards and is recognized as the best American actor of his generation.
He is?

I think Catherine Keener is fantastic. :) She's been under the rader, even as of late after doing the 40 Year Old Virgin and Capote... but I just really love her appeal and acting.

James Spader is AMAZING, thank you for reminding me

Oh goodness, James Spader... yes... Secretary... Sex, Lies & Videotape... and one of my favorites of all time, but not necessarily fitting to the aforementioned titles... Pretty In Pink. He's just THE best at playing a**h*les. ;)

Another to add to the list... Steve Zahn.

Yes, he is. Haven't you heard? I think every time they talk about the subject seriously, his name pops up the first. I don't know if he's been forgotten in the US because of his anti-Bush comments, but in Europe at least he has recognition.

Sean Penn...
Chloe Sevigny...
Jude Law...
Jared Leto...
Christian Bale...

Jude Law is way overrated imo, same with Chloe Sevigny.

Gerard Butler
Audrey Tautou
Mariska Hargitay
Christian Bale
Gary Oldman

^ I agree with all yours sirene
Amanda Seyfried
Marg Helgenberger
Guy Pearce
Ben Kingsley

To each their own, but what on Earth makes people think Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are actually talented actors? It doesn't matter to me if people like them, but usually those people do know that they aren't appreciated for their talent, but for their looks. Pitt and Cruise both know it and want it. They don't want to take interesting/risky roles, the most work they'll ever do for a role is working out and getting their hair done. There's nothing wrong in that, but they shouldn't be called actors as they quite clearly are not looking for it.
Tom IS a very talented actor. Maybe he got really far for his looks or whatever, but he really does choose interesting/risky roles. One would only have to look at his filmography. He's been in only 35 movies but has been in the showbiz for over 20 years. He is very choosy about his roles and he clearly doesn't wh*re himself out on unworthy roles. I love that about him. He clearly loves and respects what he does. He was gold in "Magnolia" and "Born on the Fourth of July", two roles I consider to be very interesting. I thought the "Magnolia" role was pretty difficult to pull off, but he did it wonderfully.

I completely forgot Peter Sarsgaard. V underrated actor despite being entertaining and captivating in every movie I've ever seen him in. Two that come to mind at the moment are "Shattered Glass" and "Boys Don't Cry."

Jude Law is not overrated as an actor...he always played in movies that did not suit him... And to ME Chloe is not overrated...

I have never seen a really good performance from Chloe...I think she is appreciated in the films because of her fashion style and cool "aura".

Ooh I agree with Amanda Seyfried!

Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls)
Zach Braff
Hugh Laurie (House)
Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars)
Evan Rachel Wood

I thought Evan was phenominal in Thirteen and Kristen Bell is fantastic in VMars.
