US Elle December 2020/January 2021 : Zendaya by Micaiah Carter

Awful styling, and done by her personal dresser? Stands to reason.
This is why Elle will always be Elle and never Vogue. The 'stylist' probably thought they were being edgy by adding the sneakers but it's just messy. Stick to dressing her for the red carpet, please!
Alex White has been nothing but a disappointment ever since she got here, a true gutless wonder. She's actually making Elle worse off than it was.
I know this deal was probably brokered by some suit who oversees international editions, but White is a respected stylist and since US Elle is the most important edition in that staple they should have some sort of say on who style these shoots. But Zendaya probably made the demands. We should thank Beyonce for that. Celebrities treating magazines as though it's an extension of their IG. It will only get worse from here onwards.

In last month's editor's letter, Nina had some nice things to say about Micaiah so I guess it's safe to say she's got him on side. For now. Not where I'd like to see him because I don't think Elle's stylists are good enough to help shape his work (it's already starting to look like Tyler-lite imo), but at least he got his foot in the door with Australian Vogue while a virtual unknown got to shoot British Vogue.

Again, will celebrity in fashion ever fade away?

Another celebrity styled by her personal stylist...
I’m all for creating opportunities but what about the up and coming stylists who wants to make a name for themselves?
And even if it’s done to promote black stylists, why not choose an up and coming one?
Except for Vogue, I feel like Zendaya is always styled by her stylist.

And on top of that, the interview is with a celebrity....Ok.

It’s good. Not groundbreaking but it does the job.

“In conversation with @tchalamet”

No, thanks.

As for the cover, she looks pissed off there. I’d be too if I were styled that way. But Zendaya honey, since you were styled by your own stylist for this cover, all I have to say is: you made your bed, now lie in it.

^^
It’s cute but it’s still the same aesthetic as the one she did last year in her Vogue spread.
That Beyonce lemonade aesthetic is good but is getting redundant. Ain’t nobody interested in glamour?

Maybe we need a Zendaya by Meisel on UK Vogue. We know her stylist is not going to style her in that case and the photography will be more interesting for her portfolio.

They really tried to turn Micaiah into Tyler. What a shame. I’ve warmed up to his work recently: the Missy Elliott cover for Marie Claire and WSJ editorial with Naomi Osaka (not really a fan of the cover, though) were very promising.

Some of the shots remind me of Tyler Mitchell's questionable aesthetic.

Meh.

IMO, celebrity stylist sometimes like impact to own client. They claim is good for their image, but due to worked with celebrities they have opportunity to work for fashion magazine.

She looks good though am not so keen on that dress for the cover. Hate the shot with a net over her face

A dud of a cover, and wouldn't be mad if Zendaya was to take a hiatus from newsstands throughout 2021. InStyle, Vogue Hong Kong and now Elle within a few short months. This feels like a non-event of a cover for US Elle, as a result. And don't get me started on the styling from Law Roach.

and its not even some random sportswear, it is couture. what are those ugly Crocs worn with Dior HC dress?

I love the editorial, the cover is ok, Zendaya is killing it in every magazine shoot she's in: great job

Zendaya is also on the cover of Essence this month and the editorial is so BEAUTIFUL that I have to believe Nina is shaking and retiring right now.

Hmmm...there's a lot of loaded and thinly veiled, coded language being thrown around about the "aesthetic." That's all I'll say about that.

I doubt it. She has several films that have been pushed to next year so I imagine there will only be more covers, sorry to tell you.

The resemblance to Storm Reid is undeniable in the editorial shots above. I'm fatigued with seeing Zen on cover after cover. She seems to be the go to poc for magazine covers. Which still perpetuates the theory or rule of one at a time. If that's the case, at least mix it up. It always looks the same, in no part due to her team, i.e. Law. Feel like I've seen this before.

This, I agree with; I would love to see women like Ryan Destiny, Letitia Wright (who has been getting covers thankfully), China McClain, Keke Palmer, etc get the kind of promo and support from fashion magazines that Yara and Zendaya get. That's not on them, and I appreciate how dedicated Zendaya is to bring up other Black creatives/photographers etc behind the scenes with her. I'm not crazy about Law in general but he and Zendaya seem to have a real connection where for me he rarely misses with her.

So it's a double month issue? I expect more issues will be combined next year.
