US GQ October 2025 : Glen Powell by Bobby Doherty

Looks like a Mad comic book spoof.....and not in a good way.

As a Mad collector, very glad you added that disclaimer!

I get that Mr Tye-dye is very much inspired by the golden era of Vanity Fair and that the cover editorial is some sort of commentary or cliché about American men, but the execution is just so off. At least those playful VF shoots still had a sense of attractiveness to them, some wit too. What I'm seeing here is too literal. An upper-body profile of Glen's fckboy/gymbro/douchey expression would have been enough without the nude tights and fake muscles. That way, they could connect with the straight men and women who already find him attractive, AND the straight-loving gays. Yes I still do labels. Don't care. Lol

I’d like to think this cover is a man mocking the BBL-overdose on the DL. And it works if that’s the case. But of course it really isn’t mocking the BBL-obsession. Because to people like Will, to make light of these people— of these types of women, with such low and dangerous standards, is unfathomable. American pop culture is very much ghetto-centric/trailer trash-centric at the moment. Unfortunately, this lowest of common denominators is the reality of representation— not the very best talents of every race/creed/gender.

Will’s direction is utter garbage of course, but there’s this very much a Mad-tribute, deliberate or not, that’s very much the state and tastes of body dysmorphia obsessed of Americans: BBL and lip-filler-obsessed women that are represented in LOL OMG consumer dolls; boys addicted to PED supplements that they don’t even care that their entire body is carpeted with sever cystic acne; and morbidly-obese 400lb+ “activist” convinced that they’re just fine, that Sydney Sweeney is the problem. The clowns and the special ed children have taken over the asylum, so to speak. And this GQ reflects that standard.

The days of playful caricature, thoughtful parody, and still marinating in high fashion goodness of David LaChapelle are gone gone gone. Everything is so literal now lest the children not understand the joke and head to social to cancel Wil/GQ/Glen. The decline and fall of Western civilization is real, people.

(Not to single out Will, but every edition of GQ is trash. Have a gander at GQ India and South Africa, and American GQ actually begins to resemble art-troll Jeff Koon’s catalogue.)

Glen Powell is handsome in his own way and instead of these weird photographs, I would love to see the sexy side of him lensed by Lachlan Bailey and styled by George Cortina.

...that Sydney Sweeney is the problem....
But she is, though

I do sincerely hope and doubt that Welch is trying to start a BBL discourse because the last thing American men should concern themselves with is what women are getting up to with their bodies. It's just not proper. But I do see the caption mentions body ideals for men and what masculinity looks like right now. That, along with male rage and loneliness, is what people should be more focused on, not someone getting lip fillers and exercising body autonomy.

Anyway, this magazine has always masqueraded as something it's not. Keen to see who else they have lined up.

I mean I guess the commentary on masculinity is quite interesting and a conversation to be had - but the impact is sadly lessened when they’ve chosen the most text book, all-American handsome male who’s already stacked like a Greek God.

Like, if you’re going to try and layer on top the pressures and tropes of trying to obtain these bodies, it might have been an idea to try and do it with someone who didn’t already have one 😂

Wish they would have been more on the nose with this looksmaxxing spoof and did this with Sean O'Pry because really why is there an epidemic of heterosexual teenage boys with eating disorders posting pictures of him, Francisco Lachowksi, and other male models from 15+ years ago on social media in some post-irony fugue

Will Welch has been the worst thing to happen to this magazine, his POV is less than that of a 13 year boy and he lacks exactly what is in the name how to be a gentleman. He was also a music editor and had nothing to do with fashion before. It should be called DQ, for douchebag quarterly at this point.
I agree, I can't stand what he has done to this once-great magazine. It had everything under former EIC Jim Nelson: incredible stories, amazing photography by image makers at the top of their game, and such sharp, witty writing. But, you can also say that about Vogue, Vanity Fair, etc. Ultimately, I think AW and the CEO are responsible for all of this.
