US Harper's Bazaar December/January 11.12 : Madonna & Andrea Riseborough by Tom Munro

I'm so happy to see Andrea on the cover but maybe it's something about the lighting or the airbrushing, but her features seem a little off - her facial contours are barely there. I don't like the tagline either 'Madonna and her new movie star.' it seems a little patronising. Apart from that...it's ok, it's pretty.

Wow...they're down to doing 10 issues a year. Sad. Last year was 11 issues and this year 10.

The subscriber's cover is so much better! Love the ed too, Madonna looks amazing.

She has that star quality that can't be denied...stating the obvious...and here she looks more like Marlene Dietrich than ever.

MUCH better in the larger format and I'm loving the subscriber copy!

The worst thing is - this issue has to kick around the newsstand for the next two months, so it can't talk about Christmas too much, or else the cover and content will be outdated by 25 December, but that's failing to make the most of the biggest commercial event in the calendar.

What's the alternative? To sell the idea of 2012? At the moment, the average person can't see past Christmas, they don't care about what's happening with spring fashion, they simply want to buy gifts and wear warm clothes.

The thing about the French Vogue Dec-Jan issue, having a guest editor gives the content a whole different focus, over and above the festive period, so the issue can still seem fairly relevant for some time.

But that's not the case with US Bazaar. Combining an issue during the summer months, perhaps you could say that not much happens before August, so it's no real loss. But to do so at this time of year, it seems like shooting yourself in the foot - in order to avoid having to produce a January issue, you miss the opportunity to make the most of a December one.

I really really like this cover. In comparison to other magazines it's not impressive, but Harper's Bazaar US has literally become so laughably consistent in their same horrible newsstand covers that I am nothing less than thrilled to see something a bit different here. Somehow even the text on the newsstand cover is so much less annoying than it normally is! It blends in better.

I haven't purchased an issue of this magazine in almost two years, but I will purchase this based almost solely on the fact that the cover is a little different.

they aren't trying to copy vogue paris feb 08 right?

I don't think they are, actually. That pose isn't so obscure that there's a clear connection. The vibe of the cover in general is completely different, the styling is different, the idea behind the image is different. Both covers make sense and work well as covers for different reasons, so while I see a similarity, I don't think HB is trying to copy Vogue Paris in any way.

Not bad, for me this is US Bazaar's best cover of 2011

the posing is more visually 'layered' than usual. i like how the Madonna cover line coincides with her arm. also interesting contrast between the two cover subjects. all and all i don't wanna hurl, just feel slightly queazy looking at this

I quite like this cover. It's very classical, something that Bazaar hasn't done in ages.

didn't madonna do another fedora series with Munro for her own promotion a couple of years ago? or was it a video

the poses remind me alot of that.

Bazaar used to be so pretty, classic and chic 4 years ago.
Now it's a cheap magazine with sans serif font on the cover
and cheap photography :( + random celebrity on the cover:S (I mean not this one of course)

Madonna does fedoras in almost everything she does. Her street style often includes them, as well. The stills Munro took for her video Give It 2 Me include fedoras, as well as his shoot with her for Elle US/UK a few years ago.
