US Vogue Winter 2025 : Angel Reese & Gabby Thomas by Norman Jean Roy

If you're going to put a WNBA player on the cover, ar least put the one the public knows/cares about.
Considering Angel has the highest social media following out of all the recent WNBA phenoms, you must mean they made the right choice? 😜

In all seriousness, as someone already said earlier in the thread, Caitlin Clark has never really headed in this direction while Angel has always been more of a crossover personality. So I imagine it all works out for them both.

Also agree that it's strange to have a shot of Gabby like that...she would've slayed even more had they used the other shot!

Who is their target audience? This choice lacks mass appeal. Demi Moore is the hottest actress right now—why isn’t she on the cover? Instead, they chose an athlete? Imagine the impact Demi could have had and how many issues they could sell with her. Is Anna intentionally trying to sabotage Vogue? She seems completely out of touch with the times.
I think you only see things through your paradigm. Because those athletes, who are the next generation of athletes, the big stars of tomorrow are as relevant as a Demi Moore who is having a moment again.
This is a relevant cover. It may not be to everyone taste but this is relevant.

And you cannot be fully into pop culture and be limited to the same circles as 20 years ago.

Because then, who will be the target audience for Demi Moore? I don’t even think it’s a relevant question at a time when print is not selling and generating as much revenues.

I don't know who she is (maybe because I'm not American and I don't follow basket) but I like the First cover (this Versace dress It Amazing)it's a beautiful cover and the editorial is not bad either... I would have preferred an actress from the film awards season
Theyr're probably gonna put Demi Moore for March now that she won Best actress at the GG and probably the Oscars soon.

Oh you would be very surprised to see who is at the court sides of those NBA games. Even more considering the fact that the wives of those team owners and people from the executive side knows about those people.

You can’t have a superficial POV on fashion today. Fashion has infiltrated all the circles of power.

It makes more sense to have a female athlete on the cover than Roger Federer…Even though it helped him a lot.

I’m sure the « women who reads Vogue » knows more about the female athletes than the models in the pages of the magazine or the new faces actresses she likes to put sometimes.
Idk basketball wives seems to be a good target - they must consume fashion, right.

I just don't trust Anna's POV. For me, she's out of touch. Even more when she tries to be iN tHe MOmEnT.

Everybody.
Today, sports is part of mainstream culture as much as fashion. Fashion has infiltrated those lanes through the arrivals of those athletes at games and Athletes aren’t scared of fashion anymore or even to appear vain.

And from a pure marketing POV, the values defended by athletes are always seen more important than those by a young actress or a reality tv star.

So Donatella is probably happy to have a dress worn by an athlete as much as the athlete is proud of the validation from Vogue and the opportunity to collaborate with Versace.

Today, there’s no such a thing as « crowd » as social media has made the representation of self very important. So a lot more people are into fashion, even from a superficial level.

Fair enough about her POV.
Unfortunately, our society and it obsession for Celebrities and the fact that after all, this has become the standard for any fashion publication tells me that she is probably more in touch with mainstream culture than a lot editors today.
There’s no counter balance today.
And Vogue US is probably still the only fashion publication that creates conversation and that serve as a sign of validation for it coverstars.

I like how Anna is giving a place to NJR, an underrated photographer for decades. Even his style can be confused with Annie's, brings all American Vogue identity. BUT, after so long and many tries, I miss Herb Ritts so much. His portraits of athletes in fashion magazines remains iconic and no one has the same eye to make it flawless.

What did they do to Gabby?! One of the prettiest athletes and they made her look to the side? I couldn't even tell that was her.

I don’t think I’ve ever been convinced by a US Vogue sports cover and these two are no exception.
