Valentino ‘Urban Riviera’ F/W 2023.24 by Steven Meisel

I mean... I know you're a huge fan @ivano and I think you're interpretation of this is very generous. I just can't help but see nothing but laziness!!

If we're bringing up references, I'd like to recall Prada's Fall 2015 ads that were conceptually similar to this (only less... cluttered). Meisel at his most commercial still does it for me - that signature lighting and soft shimmer of the skin, even the off-white backdrop which I think looks great. He knows his way around the studio and I will never tire of seeing his work. All that being said, I recognise that this barely reaches 'mid' on the scale of Meisel's work and I blame it on Valentino. He excelles where he wants to excell. His work with Baron never falters in quality because Baron knows what he's doing. Pierpaolo's desperate Madonna-esque craving for youth approval and some outdated sense of coolness brings down what would have otherwise been a nice campaign. The casting is horrid, as has become the current standard for this brand. There is zero chemistry and correlation between any two individuals here, there is no sense of identity and there's only chaos.

Meisel's work remains superior in my eyes and I'll die on that hill. You go, give us nothing sir lol

I’m surprised that some of you expects fireworks from a Valentino Accessories campaign when the brand itself is in an identity crisis.

Valentino tries to be for everyone and this is for everyone. The brand is not about glamour or whatever. It’s about big ball gowns to wear in the sewer for the subversion part… What can he do with that?

Meisel work works when there’s a point of view. Moschino was great, Loewe was great. Nobody can say that he didn’t pushed himself for Loewe.
I think about the Lanvin campaigns he did with Alber…The brand was about glamour but he interpreted it differently each times…

His work for Balenciaga was not always my taste but it was interesting.

I would love for him to work for a new brand or with a new designer. Maybe he can do Blumarine, Tom Ford, Schiaparelli or even Hermes. Somewhere his point of view could bring something.

The worst thing is that I can't even say you're wrong. Their Club Couture show was literally held next to a well-known homeless sleeping location (the part of the runway, where the models walk under the bridge).

The other three you mentioned may have moments of poor taste at times, but at least there's a consistent feel throughout the whole brand. Blumarine is Y2K/McBling through the eyes of the 20s, Tom Ford is high-end-prostitute-chic, Schiaparelli is autogynophilic couture.

Meanwhile, what is Valentino?

High-End prostitute Chic is hilarious! Ahaha!
I would definitely think about that next time I’m buying something from the brand ahahahaha!

Meisel for Bottega Veneta could be interesting too.

I like it because it helps what was otherwise a really awful collection.

I knew you guys are all saying this is commercial and boring (and it is) but keep in mind that this collection was such a hot mess that I think making it look like something you might actually want to wear is a win.

Maybe is a Valentino's series paying some kind of tribute to Meisel's work.
Hahahaha, Ivano. We've seen such "tributes" in LV and Max Mara ads already, so it's not the brands behind this concept. Who is he to the masses to pay tributes to his past work. No one cares or knows him other than industry people

A huge Meisel fan here, have a tendency to defend him to the ends of the earth and back but this is doing absolutely zilch for me. Not a fan of the casting, the concept... absolutely anything to be completely honest. The end result is just so... uninspiring and flat.

I this the same campaign

i really hate what has become of Valentino.

and i am not the only one... just look at the shops. empty, deserted, non event.

This could have looked so much better if they were in real environments but the white backdrop gives nothing and just looks lazy. Their current casting also needs a complete overhaul.
