Valentino F/W 2023.24 Paris

Valentino for Gossip Girl.

Why has he suddenly become such a one-dimensional designer who would take a theme this literally?
Hasn't he always been just like that? Back when there was Maria they interpreted each theme in the most literal way possible. His early solo collections were mostly made of looks from previous shows but diluted and even more boutique friendly. Now it's just uninspired merchandise you would find on rack during clearance sale.

Don't do Gossip Girl like that. This is the reboot of GG TRYING and failing to be "current", "woke" and with the cool kids.

This is a pre-teen trying to be punk. The casting is completely laughable.

I'm surprised they didn't have Avril Lavigne sitting front row.

The craftsmanship is there, cuts are there, some designs are good but it all seems somewhat...flat?

The black and white looks immediately made me think of Snejana making all the models wait for her at fall 2006. This is clearly not that.

Pierpaolo, you could never be glamour.

This collection couldn't be more lifeless. Due to the styling trick with the black tie, it also reminds me of Hedi Slimane without the cool factor. I wonder where PPP wants to go from now on, because this autopilot mode won't keep the hype alive for much longer.

Valentino’s clientele: Queen Sofia of Spain, Queen Paola of Belgium, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Marella Agnelli, Jackie Kennedy, Babe Paley, Gloria Guinness, Empress of Iran.
I wouldn’t imagine them wearing nor looking at this.

Makes me sad.

But I can dream.,

Aside from the fact that those women are all over 80 now, or dead, it does beg the question, could the brand still exist the way it once did, and remain successful? I do not know what the most recent sales figures are, but for me it speaks to the trajectory of brands like Oscar de la Renta (has restructured itself and tried to find its footing designing for a similar customer who has gotten older/died off) and Carolina Herrera (same as ODLR and one could argue CH today isn't as talked about as CH in her heyday) and even Bill Blass (selling cheap bags and shoes online). The brand has to evolve in order to stay relevant, and attract a new customer.

Perhaps it is time it is accepted that a new Valentino woman/young woman has is here. We can remain nostalgic for all of what once was, but would that same design aesthetic be making the same money today?
