That the “statute of limitations” has not yet lifted on Spring / Summer 2011 biannual magazines means any editorials contained therein remain subject to prosecution, or, in the case of this page, celebration. The fact is, biannual editions that hit newsstands in March are frequently lost in the maelstrom of the
show season. Today, however I would like to return to
Magazine Mountain for a look at a story that was unfairly passed over in the hasty exit from the runway season. Ford’s
Valerija Kelava features in
Pop Spring / Summer 2011 photographed by
Mel Bles for what is arguably the most ambitious
Balenciaga by
Nicolas Ghesquière editorial of the season. Since the Belgian designer showed his
S/S 11 line in Paris last September, Balenciaga has rightly featured in the pages of
Vogue Nippon,
W,
Purple and more.
Such is the excitement surrounding this Balenciaga collection that
Pop called upon the creative direction of senior contributing fashion director
Vanessa Reid for a four-part editorial devoted to Ghesquière’s Spring / Summer 2011 collection as interpreted by four different contemporary artists.
Meredyth Sparks,
Clunie Reid, and
Linder Sterling each in their own way do their artistic best to alter, embellish, and otherwise contort the photographs of Mel Bels that feature Valerija Kelava.
Gillian Wearing contributes to “Act 1,” though shot by herself and
Paul Cox. Also included in the issue along with the editorial is a conversation art critic and “super curator”
Hans Ulrich Obrist has with Nicolas Ghesquière and his long time collaborator and close friend
Dominique Gonzalez-Forester, the three of whom together provide a fascinating glimpse of the creative working behind Balenciaga. Needless to say, what with having not rushed to post it back in March and all, this isn’t a story to be skimmed, but rather one to be studied and savored much like the extraordinary Valerija Kelava.
