The pic of Peter Jackson and Saoirse Ronan is lovely. Her eyes are amazing.

Zoe was on last year's Hollywood cover.

There was no Hollywood cover last year, we got Obama instead of it.

Amanda Seyfried is the only pretty girl on the cover and she and Mia are the only ones who can actually act. And how is this "New Hollywood"? Most of these girls have been around for while.. As far as the race thing goes, Vanity Fair covers are usually 99% white with a token black girl, which is arguably worse than not having one on the cover at all so who cares? It's just a magazine cover.

I love Carey's faces there... more natural and expressive than a pasted on sultry expression. Pity they have to repeat themselves with Amanda and Kristen.

And I realise Saoirse Ronan is on the inside, but if they are at all serious about their premise then she should also be on that cover. The expression in her eyes in that picture with Jackson is above and beyond what you would expect from a 15 year old.

Yes! Now there is a girl who will go the distance. Her acting skills are so impressive, she is a natural.

I miss all that over the top glamour personally.

I agree, I find the cover to be very bland. At least the behind the scenes and the portfolio make up for the cover.

An Oscar nomination does not guarantee career longevity or permanency.

But, again, it's about "new" Hollywood. It can't be both about "paying dues" and "being new." You can't say with certainty if any of the young actresses will have long careers. You can only make a prediction based on the quality of their work, and an Oscar nomination is the highest standard in Hollywood's assessment. Let's be honest: the only reason she's out of the running is because of her appearance. If she were a young white actress who fit "the mold," she would have been a shoo-in.

And let's not forget several other actresses could have been included to diversify the cover. Gabby is just one example.

really there is a difference between being a good actress and just appearing on the cover. 5 are possibly good actors the rest are sh!te, space fillers. if they wanted space filling they could've hired a certain one person and she actually could act!

It's possible that she's inside the magazine. I think she was already on the cover of one of their Hollywood Issues.

I think they went for actresses around the same age. Around the twenties. Saoirse and Dakota are both 15 (turning 16 soon) but also have more talent than the women all put together on this cover. That may be an idea for next year. Because if there are two young actresses who are going to make it far, it's Saoirse and Dakota.

And the cover is pretty. But if I want something more daring, I will keep on focussing on Vogue.

Let's be honest: the only reason she's out of the running is because of her appearance.

I agree that her "appearance" is one of the prime factors why she's not on the cover. Again, her "appearance" is why many doubt whether or not she will still be relevant after awards season, so it'd be a premature move to place her on this list right now.

I find it very interesting that some think that right off the bat Gabby isn't going to have longevity in Hollywood. It's such negative thinking. She may not play the lead "starlet" all the time, but I think the woman has natural talent and there will be a place for her. Let's see what happens before we automatically right her off because she doesn't fit into some preconceived idea of what a leading lady should be.

Already roles are limited for African-American actresses; added to the "other factor of her appearance", her choices of scripts decreases dramatically. Precious was a one-in-a-thousand films. Movies like it are difficult to come by.

Anyway, I had been thinking Saoirse was too young for this feature but I'm glad to know she's in it! , they should've included Dakota too then and put them both on the cover, I don't think anyone has a more promising career than these two.. and they also behave like complete professionals both on and off screen, a great example for other so-called actresses.

I find the cover to be old fashioned -- but in a beautiful and easy-on the eyes manner. When I spot the issue on the shelves I'll be sure to buy it, read it, and put it in my display of captivating covers.

True, but it doesn't mean this is right. One should be judged by their talent, not their appearance. I'm of the opinion that Gabourey needs to lose a lot of weight but that shouldn't mean she's excluded from being named "one of the top new actresses." All of the women on the cover would kill for an Oscar nod. I guess the publication doesn't have the backbone of other big magazines that have put her on the cover.

I really would have liked Dakota to be included instead of one of the other women. I don't recognize most of them, honestly.
