Irving Penn's Vanity Fair Covers
by David Friend October 7, 2009
Photograper Irving Penn died today, at the age of 92. Best known for his groundbreaking portraiture and still lifes, Penn began shooting for Vogue in 1943, continuing that professional relationship, off and on, for 66 years. According to Terence Pepper, curator of photographs of London’s National Portrait Gallery, Penn was “one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. Another link to the past has been severed, another guiding light has dimmed.” In 1983, Penn provided six successive covers, shown here, for the newly relaunched Vanity Fair.
