Vogue Australia February 2014 : Cate Blanchett by Steven Chee

Covers are a joke lately! :judge:
Why do they bother to photograph a real person if they become it into an unreal-looking person.

Hate the beret in every photo of the French Made editorial. Was the beret really necessary to get the 'french' feeling?

^ It's not a beret. It is more of a flat cap.

Drake's editorial is so good. I love it. Juliana's ed is good too, saw this issue in bookstore today.

My thoughts exactly!
I can't stand how it's someone 'real', over 30, over 40, etc. And then they're photo-shopped to the point they don't even look human.
To me it always looks cheap.
I wish someone would do old-school photo retouching again.

I really like the editorials so far!

And totally agree with you, dfl-001, nothing beats old-school retouching. Especially Avedon & Scavullo!

French chic is always in style, even in Vogue Australia where Will Davidson and Jillian Davison recreate the feel of the look right down to the berets, baguettes and Breton stripes. Drake Burnette is a refined presence in Davidson’s black and white images, posing in the midst of the Eiffel Tower and along the banks of the Seine looking Parisian even though she hails from Austin and has the Texas tattoo to prove it. All and all the editorial provides an elegant tribute to a theme that has inspired for years and will always hold a special place in the hearts of fashion devotees.

I'm becoming increasingly impressed with Vogue Australia, and I'm stunned over this particular issue. I love both fashion stories inside and those images of Cate are veeeery nice. The magazine is polished and refined - I like that. It's a shame the magazine has become inaccessible here. It used to be cheaper than British Vogue, priced just over £3 but hasn't been distributed to my local store for a few years now. I'm certain the magazine now retails for £10 in the Conde Nast store down London.

French Made by Will Davidson is such a lovely story, on-point with its concept and I love the use of the beret. I'm someone who's only visited Paris the once, so I love it when we're treated to cliché Paris-themed spreads. The opening shot is beautiful, as is the Eiffel Tower shot - completely classic and timeless.

As I've mentioned on numerous occasions, the one element which bugs me about Vogue Aus, is how their fonts and layouts resemble Vogue Paris (French Made resembles a story from VP's Miss Vogue section). I think each and every Vogue should have it's own identity. I guess if you can't beat em' join em'?

Ha, I agree -- I don't understand the fashion world's obsession with French cliches.

This magazine has been fast on the decline for me after these last few dismal editions. They've lost their edge, I used to love picking it up and feel like I was being transported to Australia, now I pick it up and feel like I've been transported inside the pages of any other country's edition of Vogue.
