Vogue Italia March 2012 : Joan Smalls by Steven Meisel

A flop tbh, they probably did this to create a cheap buzz.Typical!

Well at least it worked, look at how many pages of discussion we've had for the cover and the main ed alone. That having been said, I don't think they'll reach their ultimate goal which is selling more copies; many members (and probably many people outside tFS) are quite upset about the way this sub-culture is being projected.

For me, the only ed worth opening the thumbnails for has been Guinevere by Sundsbo. Eagerly waiting for another reason to purchase this issue...

Besides the huge dissapointment that was the main edit^_^, the rest of the issue is pretty solid. Love everything about Guinveres edit, her hair, the styling, the pink car, fabulous:heart:

Can we not call Joan Smalls an idiot and insult her? She needs to eat, therefore she took the job. Whether she understood the implications or not (and she has never called herself American, always Puerto Rican... just saying, it's important to respect that) is not even the point. Shame Meisel, Sozzani, the stylists, etc. for it, but I hate it when people blame the models.

But yeah, I won't be buying this issue. Sorry, not sorry. I love most of the eds, but the main one is pretty shocking to me. If they wanted to glorify the culture, couldn't they do it like they glorified heavier women in June? Glamorous, high end photos. They could've EASILY done that here.

There is a big difference between paying homage and making mockery of people who inspire editorials. VI could have made a nice homage to the culture they are representing in that heinous edit by appropriating elements of that culture and making them more high fashion. Instead they made a mockery of the people by choosing to highlight stereotypical ideas they have about those women (babies, malt liquor) and presenting them in the most tasteless way imaginable. They forgot to even make the clothing in the editorial seem desirable as they were too busy trying to cram as many stereotypes and caricatured elements as the could into each frame. It's sad magazines like VI are held up as some arbiter of taste and class when they are lacking in both.

Exactly. Now if the girls' skin color was painted a different tone and given different 'ethnic features' then yes it would come off as racist.

This editorial is showcasing a culture not a lot of people know anything about. I've been to hair shows and I've grown up in areas where this style is worn everyday and it's a style many races exhibit, not just the one race many are assuming.

With that said, the main edit is fabulous, lush and in your face- the exact qualities that describe hood chic.

You can't see that they are mocking these people and trying to make them look like a joke? The pregnant picture is beyond insulting.

Just looking at the Vogue Italia Cover Archive, I think that in the latter of 2011 and so far in 2012 the magazine is recently getting it's special something back..that it seemed to be lacking for the past 2-3 years. I think that it just needs a little refinement. As interesting and controversial the main story may be conceptually, the content itself is a little boring. I think there is a lack of direction in the way Meisel has been shooting his stories..and it's even made worse by the layout. In order for Vogue Italia to really move forward it just needs to be more polished. I feel as though so far these last few months we've seen a bit more of an effort in the stories and the best of what Meisel has done isn't good just because it's reminiscent of Vogue It's earlier days. I for one am now more excited to see what they'll do next month..and I haven't felt that anticipation for the magazine for a while. I've always been interested to see what comes next, but it seems as though there is more of a focus right now that's helping them pull it all together, little by little, month to month.

The words I have to describe this issue are literally...."hot mess"....just appalling.
