Vogue Italia May 2011 : Kristen McMenamy by Steven Meisel

Lord have mercy! Stella can do no wrong! I love the second shot of her in the green and orange. Stunning.

It kind of bothers me that their second editorial with black models is almost exactly like the other editorial with black models in this issue. Can they not think of other ways to think of to shoot models?

If you see the whole thing, you may see the difference between the 2 spreads. the first one is a tribute to black beauties and the 1960's afros and kinky hair, the second one is about style and smile.... the rest is Ellen von Unwerth's usual work....

Also I don't understand why we can't use *black* to qualify a fashion story starting a black model (s) the word -black- is not racist, or offensive.. Isn't it?

that said..... I really enjoyed this issue, Steven Meisel is really at his best.

the problem is because VI always makes it an issue by having "Black" in the title, as opposed to coming up with a creative title for the editorial story. Instead they have "Black beauties" or "Black Allure" which isn't something they do when there is a group of white models together in an editorial.

I'm happy that they are even featuring black models, but why not give the same opportunities and showcase them the same way they do other models?

That's exactly it. Nothing's wrong with the word black itself here, it's just that they can't seem to come up with an original or creative title for editorials with black models. Like they wouldn't call Kristen's editorial "Pale White Girl in Hotel" so I don't get why the editorials with black models have to be so literal.

Using "Black" in the title objectifies the models. They become less individual as models and people, and clumped together as a bunch of objects that have one similar characteristic. I'm glad that black and non-white models are having attention brought to them, but hopefully soon magazine editors will learn to do it in more respectful ways.

Imagine an editorial called WHITE GIRLS. (, or what blueorchid said).

I'm not impressed at all that Vogue Italia is featuring black models. I will not thank the editors, photographers, etc for giving models of color an inch while white models continuously get yards and yards of exposure/success. It is pure objectification that Black models are getting work based off a thematic/stereotypical feel of a photoshoot. If you haven't noticed, models of color get more work during the Spring/Summer months because the clothes are usually 'colorful & tropical' and who best to wear these clothes than women of color- gimme a break. If editors and photographers want to be truly groundbreaking, let's give models of color solo editorials, solo covers, solo campaigns all year round- don't round them up like cattle and portray them in ONE high fashion photoshoot. This is not progress. SMDH @ all of this.

Maybes after I have the issue at hand I will value Meisel's editorial. Because right now, all I see is a disorganized hotel room, with a swimsuit clad Kristen.

it's black and white portraits only. a few of them, but not full page, it's not properly an ed, there's an accompanying article with the photos
So are the images and text all on one page? If that is the case then people can now start giving VI the side eye, because that is under-delivering, I don't think that it should have been a 10+ pages, but at least three to four, I would have even accepted two, because in this case the Vincent Peters images weren't that great IMO. Also, in fairness to VI they have had the images on the website, and I do think that Tyra has switched her message around to include / emphasize that being featured on Vogue Italia's web site is a key part of the prize.
