Vogue Mexico December 2019 : Estrella by Tim Walker

This is a great close issue for Vogue Mexico. I don’t care about the reprint (actually is a collaboration with British Vogue) but is the first time in history that a Muxe (a kind of transgender woman here in Mexico) is on the cover of a magazine.

Just to clarify: a kind of means that them play a femenine role in society but not all muxes identify themselves as trans.

Thanks for explaining Jorgepalomo, such a cool cover, i don't mind it being a reprint!

This cover actually looks stunning at face value. It's almost as if we nearly got lumped with the usual textbook Walker shoot, but instead of a chalk covered Tilda Swinton or Adwoa and her annoying deadpan, out came Estrella through the bland whiteness with her vibrant colours and drama which probably made both Frida Kahlo and Carmen Miranda turn in their graves out of envy.

The fact that it's a reprint is sad because I believe this is Karla's first? But it still looks a million times better than Edward's reprint with Nicole and Margot. You either have an eye for covers and images, or you don't. It's like taste, it can't be learned. Karla's got it.

She also reprinted women in Hollywood portfolio by Nick Knight last february

Did she reprint that for a cover? Can't seem to recall that one. Editorials they do reprint, most recently the one with all the Latina models from Spanish Vogue.

Still, I don't hate it. Because I just have to think what 'Vogue Miami' was like before she came along to acknowledge that she's just about one of the top 5 Vogue editors in the world right now.

Stunning.

Captivating.

wouldve used a different color for the logo though

I'm kind of stunned. Vogue Mexico continues to raise their bar. To see a muxe on the cover of a major fashion magazine is.... I don't even know how to compare it. Jorgepalomo explained the significance well, I just want to add that muxes are usually belonging to indigenous groups.

That being said, from an art direction standpoint, I'm not in love with the cool color scheme background and how 'MEXICO' blends into the fan. Also, do we know if this is a cover or if it is a secondary page?

That was in february 2017. Edward shared the actors portfolio with Karla. Both of them are good friends. They worked together in W magazine, and her aesthetic is close to Edward.

This is a personal complain. I still don't have the november issue in my hands. That was quick, hahaha. I hope they give me time for buying Vogue and GQ! It's very hard to find in the next month where I live.

First Yalitza and now this... now i really see MÉXICO in the cover of this magazine

That explains why the Yalitza editorial from a few months ago shares the same location as Walker's edit. Cannot say I'm mad about the reprint because I don't think the british Vogue team would have achieved the same authenticity without the help of their mexican counterpart. The casting is a dead on representation of mexican beauty.

Will be buying this for sure.

I am really disappointed to see a non mexican model in a cover tribute to my country. Estrella’s one was perfect, really captures what really means our culture.

So basically the estrella cover was for marketing purposes?

Yeah, that's weird...

How classic of big, commercial magazine with a large platform to use a person who represents something real and something people don't often talk about or see on the cover of Vogue just as attention bait. They lured us in, made us believe they're ''woke'' and brave enough to put a muxe on their anniversary cover and then showed their true intentions. I hate this! No wonder the EIC worked closely with Edward on this s*it, they're two of the same sort.

Maybe Karla isn't the evil here. I remember she worked SO HARD to put Yalitza back in january. In the october issue of the Latin version she said in the editor's letter page that she regrets don't using that cover for both editions. I don't know if there's pressure from Condé Nast to the Vogue editors. Franca Sozzani was about to get fired after her polemic issues. I don't get why some people are talking trash on Karla since day one. That woman changed this magazine for good. As Benn said, thank God "Vogue Miami" it's over. She put Cholitas on the cover, a plus size model as Paloma, Yalitza in representation of native people. After all those moves, is she really a bad Vogue editor??? Even most of her covers this year were better than anything VI, VP, BV and US Vogue produced this year. I love you aracic (you're my sweet beautiful boy), but it's not her fault.
