SURPRISE! JAMES CHARLES GOT A VOGUE COVER. *clown emoji*

I was looking at that cover, intending to make a joke that they’d given James Charles a Vogue cover, and then I saw that they actually *had* given him a cover. I’m cackling! I actually like James, but... the shade of being asked to appear on an issue highlighting imperfection.

I had something good to say about this cover but I dislike James so much that I’m not gonna say anything and hope that the second cover wasn’t him.

A joke.

"there are two covers, a ton of images & a full interview! this is only the first cover, so much more to come this week"

OMG NOT THIS :sick::sick:

For the first time since their new direction, I’m not gonna defend the magazine (lol) just wait for december and act like this cover never happened... like the Vogue Italia “tribute” to Helmut Newton

It's always risky when a print magazine puts a social media star on the cover, because they exist in such a fast-moving environment where the drama flows, so you can be seen as shady on Tuesday, then it's all forgotten in a fortnight when someone else turns out to be the villain of the tale, until someone goes digging for something that was said online as a teen, and then you'll get cancelled for real a week after the launch of your palette when enough people on reddit complain about poor customer service from the company who paid you for the use of your name.

Print media can't capture that, they can only weigh in clumsily at a certain point in the cycle and be instantly seen as an outdated record.

I don’t disagree, but at the same time, the huge exposure these social media stars bring might outweigh any negatives. James is not passively promoting this cover with a throwaway post, he is sharing his emotional response and how much it means to him across all platforms to his tens of millions of followers. Vogue Portugal’s post with the cover must already be their most liked instagram post ever. In one hour it’s accrued more likes than 2 of the Beyoncé covers did on British Vogue’s Instagram, which were posted days ago. He’s also actively encouraging his followers to preorder the issue and the comments on VP’s post are flooded with people asking where they can buy it. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of their best selling issues in a long time, with the highest media/social media engagement.

I truly am speechless this time. And I'm not one of those people who hate social media stars but the two don't mix for me.

To think a lot of people here used to legit be fearful and find it inconceivable the idea of someone like Lindsay Lohan scoring Vogue covers back in her heyday (and she ended up only getting Spain) :ninja: and considering everyone who've gotten covers (US included) in the last decade... no further comment.

I... I don’t care and I’m going to say it - he’s ridiculous. regardless of how many followers he has.

it’s publications like Vogue that to give any type of platform to these ‘celebrities’ are the ones to blame.
it reeks of desperation and I’m not surprised considering the sh*tty covers they’ve been releasing this year (and last year and the year before and so on).

Sofia Lucas has been a terrible editor with try-hard covers that have no fashion appeal. it’s sad.

I always thought I’d cringe at the idea of an influencer getting a Vogue cover or any major cover but I felt excitement when I saw the thread title. I also really enjoy the cover. I’m happy for James too.

I also understand that magazines are constantly having to change their subjects to keep up with culture & also to draw in more sales. I imagine it’s also the reason why the change from just models to celebrities happened to keep up sales. I’m happy for this cover if it keeps up sales for the future of magazines and possibly brings in new readers.

Yikes, you've got to be kidding me! Why Vogue? Would Allure not make more sense, if he had to get a cover?
I guess his dream finally came true because he has always been aching to be on the cover of Vogue and to think I laughed it off that would never happen.
This cover more than anything proves how desperate Vogue Portugal is to have their covers 'trend'. I now wonder if they didn't intentionally run that mental health cover to spark outrage.

It may be a one-upmanship for him because he's the first Youtuber to get a Vogue cover, but it's definitely a new low for this Vogue!

Didn’t he actually start his career/get famous because of his campaign with CoverGirl? That’s how I heard of him, had no idea he was a YouTuber until last year, with the whole “Bye Sister” thing. So technically, was he a model for a major brand *before* he was a social media star? I’m half trolling, but YouTuber isn’t a dirty word anymore and major brands actively seek YouTuber partnerships. Plus you’ve got major names like Naomi, Karlie, Will Smith, etc. trying to be YouTubers....

Addison Rae’s Vogue cover is coming, so be prepared. If not her, than Emma Chamberlain or Dixie D’Amelio.
