W February 2011 : Rooney Mara by Jean-Baptiste Mondino

Ugh, why does Hollywood have to Hollywood-ize everything. Is nothing sacred?

Best Performances

It seems to me they are importing the best features of Tonchi's NYT magazine into W. They used to do this same sort of portfolio every awards season at the Times, and for a few years it was also shot by Inez & Vinoodh. It would have been more interesting to at least get a different set of photographers in the mix, but I&V are the cool kids so maybe not...

One thing I have to say though is that while these pictures are very interesting, some even beautiful, I'm scratching my head that they couldn't be bothered to even find one minority to feature. No one can tell me that out of all the hundreds of performances delivered this year there wasn't a single notable one given by a person of color. I don't want to turn this into a debate really, I just find it a little tiresome especially when some of the people who are featured didn't impress me in the slightest. Justin Timberlake is never going to convince me that he's a ~serious~ actor.

Best Perfomances, is typical I&V celebrity portraits but I love it. However, I totally agree with you LUXX about diversity.
I'll definitely going to get this. Rooney's ed is great and the James Franco feature couldn't make me happier.

Best Performances is officially the least moving thing I've seen in W. They have got to be kidding me with all of it.

This is all so bad...apart from Natalie.

Tonchi seriously needs to stop stealing the whole 'interview and editorial with one designer' from Interview...stupid ho .

oh pedro...i also thought this was nyt magazine! since i saw the name "mondino" on the thread i instantly thought: "hello old t magazine".

Im afraid this issue has no fashion editorial.. since the amount of celeb portraits is... massive..

i like it! i feel if they didnt keep her in character it wouldve been boring, just another pretty girl on a cover.

Love everything so far! This seems like a pretty nice issue.

Mark Ruffalo looks so uncomfortable.

Seeing those shots of Rooney makes me more excited to see David Fincher's version of the GWTDT. She looks great!

I also LOVE...LOVE....LOVE these shots of Helena Bonham-Carter and Elle Fanning:

I find this models vs. celebrities thing very boring. I honestly do not care at this point if W never features another model on the cover again, I only am concerned with whether or not they created captivating images and unique content. For me that is what makes a magazine interesting - this cover, along with the Ryan & Michelle cover from earlier in the year, represent a very positive and beautiful direction. Not the same as what were used to, but certainly beautiful and eye-catching. Compared to all the other covers this month, I think this is something different - even if you hate it there is something edgy and cool about it.

at this point, i think the model vs. celeb debate on magazine covers is dead...
it's clear that american fashion magazines are going to have more celebs than not, and if you want models, best get a subscription to vogue italia, muse, etc. because celebrity features are here to stay...

like luxx, i want to see compelling images and interesting (and fresh) content, which has always been w's strength...
imo, the ryan gosling/michelle williams cover has been tonchi's best since taking over...
i was very hopeful for this cover but i am disappointed that she is "in character," as others have said, i feel it's a tactic for entertainment weekly or premiere, not a fashion magazine...
this was a perfect opportunity to showcase an up and coming actress and talk about her, not in the context of a how a director sees her...
