W Volume #7 'The Art Issue' 2018 : Cardi B by Mickalene Thomas

I am a fan of Cardi's music so I don't mind seeing her on magazines but I have no idea what she's doing on the cover of an art issue.

haha what is that story?

I'm gonna tell you all the story because is my favorite sad/funny story of a magazine.

They claimed to be Vogue's biggest competition in Mexico and they had only 1% percent of the readers compared to another fashion magazines here (Vogue has the 47% and Elle 21%). When the magazine hired Brenda Diaz as a EIC, they started to try hard with their covers bringing supermodels and a bit of b-list photographers -some were amazing- and art direction -even they brought Naomi Campbell for an special anniversary shoot- but I guess they couldn't afford that. So, they hired Adma Kawage and she did the same as Brenda for less money but the magazine didn't increase their readers.

Two years ago they increased the price of the magazine -from $49 MXN to $79 MXN- and released a convocatory sponsored by Huawei to find the next big mexican fashion photographer -the big price was the march (main) cover of the magazine-. The 5 finalists traveled to CDMX for a photoshoot using Huawei's iP9 phone. The results were a flop that they decided to included the pictures as a supplement from the march issue. But, they hired the winner to shoot all their covers and editorials for Bazaar and sometimes for a magazine called Vanidades, Marie Claire and Esquire and Huawei never worked with them again.

The saddest thing is that they hired a new EIC again and they shared her with Marie Claire and Vanidades and the results were not good. Now, they don't have an EIC, the only photographer they had is not working with them since 4 issues back and they're still claiming be Vogue's biggest competition.

Ps. My english is not good as the future of the magazine.

That's true! In 2017 they fired all the HB Argentina team for an editorial crisis. And they started to pusblish eds from the mexican edition (I only bought that Jessica Hart and RJ King cover). HB is trying so hard to be at the same level as Vogue and ELLE, but they can't. So sad, because HB is older than those two (in the world), but they can't be that popular. Sorry for saying this in a W Magazine thread, ha.

Look, I dont hate Cardi, I listen to her, its just that fell like that she doesn't give a crap about fashion - or the art crafting hip-hop songs I must add -, she is just following PR directions, what is not like a bad thing, but its too obvious, so looks fake. She have already a recognizable aesthetics in terms of fashion, but its not genuine like Nicki, AB, Lil Kim... Its almost like a scam.

"Poetic License" and "Push and Pull" are the best of the issue.

The Walker x Swinton edit is simply sublime! I'm in love.

I don't understand how Tilda Swinton as Edith Sitwell didn't made the cover! Styling, setting, everything looked amazing. Rest of the magazine is a throwaway though.

I'll try and split my digital copy later if nobody posted them.

Cardi B’s feature looks like something from Instyle.

@Benn98 Could you post beauty editorial featuring Xie Chaoyu?

Sure, here we go. It seems it's only a one-page edit, but she's also got a Tim Walker story with Ling Ling in Vogue Italia. Should post that soon as well.

I adore Tilda's editorial, but then what else can you expect from a Tim & Tilda pairing other than magic.

On that note, it must be incredible to work with this woman. I bet she smells beautiful and nearly floats when she walks and everyone on set is quiet because she probably speaks in a quiet manner. I imagine she leaves quite a mark on people.
