What Are You Listening to Right Now?

Not happy as everything's going to be alright escapism-- but happy in that things will go on despite everything may not be alright.

He's a moodmaster.
Moodmaster.. that's the right word. Such a gorgeous album, and not just because Jonny (my ultimate teenage crush lol, and -after maturing a little- artist I look up to ) is in it. He works with so many layers and is so thoughtful and curious (Frank, not Jonny). It did not make me particularly happy though.. I can't stop playing but on a personal level, it feels like a pretty announcement of how it is possible to forever carry a torch or rot in one particularly feeling (how's that for pessimism :brows::mellow:).

[also- I hadn't posted here in so long! I used to be all over this section..)

Maybe “happy” isn’t exactly the right word… More of a sense of contentment— at peace. He’s such a seductive, soothing storyteller, that he puts me in a contented mood.

And being the neurotic, stressed and insatiable mess that I usually am, Frank’s music, voice and lyrics provide that calm in a storm. Lana has that same sort of spell over me, but I tend to be mesmerized by her for these tragic LA characters she seems to be portraying rather than for being herself. I still play “Super Rich Kids” and follow it up with Jody Watley’s “Looking For A New Love” a lot these days cos it makes me feel… content— despite the unshakable pessimism that’s clearly there in their music and that’s also a part of myself. I suppose an acceptance of that sadness, that pessimism (and still carrying a torch for someone who’s long gone from my life LOL) will always be a part of (my) life that I hear in Frank’s music without it being turned into some torch song or “I Will Survive” anthem is what I can relate to-- and feel happy about.

The delivery of “I thought I was dreaming when you said you love me…” Sigh… LOL

Anyway, glad you’re enjoying "Blonde" as well Mullet … But who’s “Jonny”???

aw, Super Rich Kids was my introduction to Frank Ocean right after moving to LA. My coworkers would play either that or Crack Rock every.single.morning and thank whoever did it almost like thanks for making the coffee today.. months later I started playing it on my own like it was some mood enhancer, or like I was being understood, I don't know lol.

I never made the connection but you're so right on Lana and Frank's singing having a calming effect in general and maybe coming from a place of acceptance.. which in my experience, can sometimes be more tormenting than more intense stages (e.g.I will survive).. there's nothing after that.

Jonny Greenwood, he's in Seigfried with the arrangements (hello, minute 2:00 :crush:.. thanks for participating in your album, Frank, but Jonny's here now ).

[Playing it now] I'd do anything for you.. in the dark.

really- i like the vid more than the song though...

Oh OK— Radiohead! ...Yes— teenland memories and some of the most stunning music videos to this day (Street Spirit’s visuals still has me in awe. And for a long time, I always thought that the guy in the “Karma Police” video was Peter Lindbergh LOL): Guys would copy Jonny’s trademark sloppy Brooks Brothers tie untied, white shirt, vintage skinny leather jacket and droopy jeans ensemble with the messy bed hair, while I was saving my coins for my first Helmut Lang coat so I could wear it with my Prada nylon shirt (inspired by Brett Anderson and Justine Frischmann’s cooly, sloppy style code).

Frank and Lana are the meisters of mood, aren't they? She’s like some lingering glamour-drenched ghost of Art Deco LA and he’s the alien spirit given one last night on Earth like in some Jim Jarmusch film. Their musical-hopping influences always feel genuine cos they’re genuine culture magpies and not searching for a new gimmick. “Super Rich Kids” is so endearing and slyly cynical: The sunniness of “Clueless” the movie meets the drug-stained nights of "Less Than Zero” the book (and Jody Watley’’s “Real Love” as the soundtrack.[ And.. Hedi providing the early-80s wardrobe for it all]).

Speaking of LA… Team Sleep always reminds me of LA— and Tokyo, of the mid-2000. Chino Moreno’s voice is heaven-- like moving through thick, warm liquid somewhere up in the Malibu hills...

haha you got all these good pop culture references going.. why is Hedi making a cameo in your visually charged post I don't know but I'm SO glad I wasn't the only person that found Jonny to be a true fashion icon! (I know you're saying the opposite but your memory implies that you did ).. he wore such good navy pieces, and his hair was/still is like wow (but then I think most men with long/longish hair give women a run for their money, probably because they do literally nothing to it- not even water and soap often haha).

I still love deftones! I was playing them the other day.. probably my longest music 'affair', maybe longer than radiohead after being indoctrinated at 10 by the older cousins lol..

lcd soundsystem/ get innocuous! (normally can't stand their music but saw them live last night and now this song is stuck in my head, I've been playing it all day long...).

^^^ LOL Sorry to ruin the imagery with the Hedi inclusion! I can’t come up with an 80s designer that does 80s California-garage band as expensively stylish as Hedi… And I really want Hedi to wardrobe a Less Than Zero adaptation… with Sofia Coppola directing it: She has such an eye for casting the right people. That 80s Less Than Zero mess doesn’t count cos who would pay for sex with Robert Downey Jr????

Deftones…. Let's add them to the moodmasters' clique. I don’t know what Chino’s singing about most of the time, and I don’t care: That voice, those Depeche Mode melodies meshing so tremendously with the metal riffs, and the OC skaters imagery is love at first sight. Glad it’s still an ongoing affair for you as well, Mullet. I do hope Chino slims down though… I remember I had the biggest crush on Q-Tip— more so when he got buffed during his Amplified period… then he got… fat. Like Eric Cartman fat LOL

:rofl::rofl:

Chino was actually one of my early crushes, at the time he looked like all the skater teenagers in my school (but, developed). Then he came back with White Pony and sure, beautiful sounds but .. binging hard writing these breathtaking melodies, babe?..

Still sad Chi Cheng died btw. I ran into an old friend from those days last year and he was like "I cried when he died" lol.. (I cried when Mark Linkous died though.. I don't even want to talk about it ).

homeshake/ cash is money.

^^^ Skaters... my weakness-- even if I'm too old to be messing with them now. Sigh...

That Marc Jacobs collection with the campaign that had the girls laying around a beach setting at night was soooooooooo White Pony in mood.
