I haven't found anything new that has impressed me in music in a long while. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, I don't know. I've even lowered my standards. White Stripe and Franz Ferdinand are Ok, but uninspiring. Where are the Nine Inch Nails and the Rage Against the Machine of today?! Everything just seems so bland... If anyone out there can recommend anything, please do. Otherwise, I've mostly been buying lounge music mostly (a la Hotel Costes compilations and Thievery Corporation). At least the new NIN album is coming out soon.

My favorites are:

Industrial/Rock:

(as mentioned above)
NIN
RATM
Smashing Pumpkins
Manson is not bad, hit or miss but I always give him the benefit of the doubt.

Classic Rock:

Pink Floyd
The Doors

Bard (I hate that term) music:

Leonard Cohen
Tom Waits

Punk:

Sex Pistols
Rancid
(please do not recommend Good Charlotte  )

On a lighter note:
Portishead
Bjork
Fiona Apple
Tori Amos
Macy Gray
Enya

Lounge music:
(as mentioned above)

Hotel Costes compilations
Thievery Corporation
Tosca

International:
Cesaria Evora
Magic System

Where are the Nine Inch Nails and the Rage Against the Machine of today?!

The closest we have is someone like Eminem. Maybe he is considered a "sellout" but he is the Bible for the kids who are angered by the way the world works, just as RATM was for the previous generation.

I read an article from my school newspaper and the author suggested that the older black rappers like Tupac and Notorious BIG are some of the most recent "statement" musicians. She put in some of the lyrics where they sing against injustices like r*pe and murder. You could think of it as RATM from the minority perspective.

Just a thought

But I´m probably as brazilian as Hermann Maier is (=famous Skier), so I´m very middle-european.

faust: I firmly believe you're not looking hard enough :P

There are wonderful musicians today, I won't recommend you any heavy stuff cause I'm not much into it  but considering we have in common artists like Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, The Thievery Corporation and Bjork, I'd highly recommend you Elizabeth Anka Vajagic, she's this GREAT GREAT singer from Montreal who makes dark, gothic-esque and absolutely beautiful music, her album is called 'Stand with the stillness of this day', get one or two songs from it at least, I'm sure you won't regret it :flower: .

also..

Explosions in the Sky
Wolf Eyes
Godspeed you Black Emperor!
Sofa
Black Dice (not sure if you'll like them, though)

.. and basically just anything from Constellation records ^_^

Gracias. I'm not looking hard enough, that's for sure. I kind of gave up on the music scene - and I have niether time nor energy to look for the obscure talent. But I have you :flower: . Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into it.
