What brands have lost their cachet this decade?

Great suggestions, everyone. You're right, in my haste, I misspelt "cachet". Apols ;)

Valentino: since Garavani left.
Chloé: since Melim Andersson left.
Prada: since Spring 2009.
Emanuel Ungaro: since Dundas/Cortazar left.
Pucci: since Williamson left.
Gucci: since Spring 2009.

I am sure there are tons more that I hate. :D

Definitely Gucci,it's still relevant now just because of Tom Ford:ninja:

Dior and Gucci are probably the two best, and most obvious examples. At this point I think both are riding on the fact that they're big names that everyone knows and associates with high fashion and luxury. Like kasper said, Gucci probably still owes a lot of it's success to Tom Ford. Even though plenty of people might not know or care that he's gone, they're ultimately buying into the world he built. As far as Dior, I don't even know what's keeping them afloat. It's not even like their products have that fashion-y appeal that Gucci has.

I also think Versace has lost some of it's appeal, though I think a lot of thatis because they've softened their edge and tamed the vitality that so many people associate with the name. It's gotten a little safe.

I agree with whoever named Cavalli. It's just trash now. IDK I like what Frida is doing with Gucci. (guess I am alone on that one). Valentino....needs time IMO.

Sigh, I'm gonna enter in LV. I have a BIG BIIIG gripe with Marc Jacobs and what he is doing with LV. ARGGGGHHHHH

I think Marc Jacobs is pretty irrelavant these days. He is just going downhill.

LV. The only thing that makes them a luxury brand are their prices and their history. They are a running joke, not a fashion house (unless somebody considers ugly shoes and show-off bags fashion).
Dior Homme has lost the sleek estetic, newer desings looks so clumsy, even belt buckles look like they come from Bershka or something, not high-fashion label.
Cavalli and Dolce & Gabbana - their collections are so boring for the last years, always the same recycled thing with some "inspiration" from other designers. Dolce is especially boring, the end product is very generic, the only thing that stands out is that metal tag on everything, even t-shirts. Few $60`000 glittery dresses can't make up for that.
Gucci and Dior are still balancing on the edge, they are very close to become like LV.

Margiela never had that status in my eyes, there was a bit avant-garde, but mostly his clothes are incredibly basic and boring, from what I see in the stores. That label is/was over-hyped. Or maybe I missed something.
Ungaro remains to be seen, maybe the next collection will be better. If not, maybe they should just do a casting show, Next Ungaro Designer, that should give them some PR, that's what they want most, no? :innocent:
I'm not sure about Givenchy tho, I hear they still aren't making profit, I can't remmeber the last time I saw Givenchy on red carpet. All I see is their Nightingale bags for time to time. Is Givenchy cachet, or whats the deal with them?

I think it is funny that Dior when Galliano is doing a new New Look is called irrevelant.
But you're right, he's been since a moment, now. I think his relecture of bourgeoisie codes are kind of dead, now. It's really nice though that sexual movement he's done recently ...

must question abt it ...

what do you guys exactly expect from Dior ?

I also find it funny that LV has to be said "loosing its cachet" - while this decade was probably the decade of the likes Marc Jacobs. It is really hard to judge all this ... Vuitton as a luxury maroquinerie business has definitely lost its cachet (though i'm still craving for a huge malle-luggage louis vuitton ... i even want a vintage one for the dirty laundry). eventhough they spread the world with this.
but on a more general thing, Louis Vuitton has earned A LOT OF CACHET !! All their collabs, all their shops, all their shows .......... The start of this century is labelled the LVMH one in Fashion History ! ....
(the underground belongs to the 90s ....).
Don't forget, MJ @ Louis Vuitton is pretty new ...

and I've read Prada, too ... I really do NOT think Prada has lost cachet ...

Thierry Mugler has lost his cachet ! Don't forget he was still showing in the 90s !
A lot of "parisians" designers have lost their cachet ... Jeremy Scott, Eric Bergère, I. Marant (though she's having a new boom since 3-4 seasons ...), Jean Colona (WHERE THE HELL IS HE ????), Martine Sitbon (though she's coming back ...), Paco Rabanne (they have completely disappeared), Xuly Bet, JCDC, ETC.

and Isaac Mizrahi ?????? what do you think ???? i think zac posen is sort of the new-last Isaac Mizrahi ....

I don't know if it ever really had credibility amongst the fashionistas, but DSquared2 has really, really gone downhill over the decade.

I have to disagree with you about Versace, and not just because it's my personal favorite label. Versace, if anything, was on the downside from the late 90's (Gianni's passing) to about Fall 2005. Spring 2006 really, REALLY changed things for the positive, and now I think Versace is once again an enviable brand- not to mention, Atelier Verscae has blown up amongst celebrities for the red carpet.

Most of the labels were just kind of a rollercoaster to me. Gucci was fantastic under Tom Ford (he caught the aesthetic perfectly), but really went downhill after his departure. The last two seasons, however, have done a total 360 and now Gucci is once again the go to label for what is sexy now.

Dior and Chanel have just kind of... flatlined to me. They aren't terrible now, but John and Karl have botn sort of become stuck in a creative rut; the collections are all starting to run together, like one big, nice collection, and not a series of innovative seasons. Perhaps that's what they're going for?

I'm anxious to see what the next decade holds for Nina Ricci and Rochas. While Rochas was perfect under Olivier- I feel like he really captured the spirit- I don't know if the direction it's going in now will really catch hold. Nina Ricci, on the other hand, was perfect under Lars Nilsson in my opinion; hopefully the financial powers that be will be able to find a designer that caputres that same girlish, coquette charm and leads the brand into the lucrative direction I know it could establish.

LV is one that springs to mind. So horrifying when I see footballers and their WAG's wear them. They really make a brand look tacky. LV is more the brand that showcases the syndrom of ''too much money, without the style'' for me. I can't help it.

Dior, D&G, Gucci.. Those are the ones that lost it the most to me.

For me it's definitely Gucci.

LV and Chanel had become more commercial. Also bad for these brands are the millions of fake bags and belts outside.

^ agreed, the millions of fakes don't help LV or Chanel much. Imagine walking around in your LV and having people ask you if its a fake!

Gucci for me, without a doubt. Not all that fond of Tom Ford's aesthetic.

I would say Dior and Chanel, but when I look at it in retrospect, they built and progressed such a strong presence in fashion for so long that it kind of reaches a plateau. I feel that their work is beautiful, but has yet to reach another level (an amazing-WOW factor)...

i'd say chanel, dior, gucci....they need to bring back tom ford. something bad. sad to say but i haven't seen much from marni as of late...

what about D&G and Moschino?

D&G or dolce and gabbana had a weak moment in the second half of the decade. the former tried to do modern and uber trendy, while the latter ventured in princess gowns.
BUT, their last collection for both lines (cowboy-in-jeans themed, and pure Sicilia respectively) tells me they are back to their thing/game. And we know they are GOOD at that.

For me, Chanel hasn't lost it. Even though it gets ripped off a lot of the time the brand has stayed true to its heritage and never strayed too far from the classic Chanel 'look'. D&G, Versace, Gucci have always been tacky, in my opinion and give in to trends too much.
