I want to spend at least a year in a Spanish speaking country so I can perfect my speaking skills but I don't know what country to stay in.I had a really hard time understanding Spain spanish when I was there so any other recommendations would be great. Every teacher I've had who was from colombia, I could understand perfectly.

:P argentina, mexico. ecuador, bolivia, uruguay, paraguay, colombia, venezuela, costa rica, nicaragua, guatemala, cuba, southern phillipines, honduras, peru, etc.

personally, i think argentinian spanish sounds beautiful.

yeah but argentinian spanish is hard, costa rican spanish is the easiest....

All the spanish speaking people I know have come from either Peru, Colombia or Chile...

I would say go to Argentina, but what do I...a non-spanish speaker know? -_-

I am from Uruguay and you should come here or to Argentina. We have the same accent and it´s not that difficult. Plus, we don´t have a strong accent, as people do in Mexico, Chile, Peru etc...

Funny how this is all so relative, to me, you can't get a stronger accent than way people from uruguay speak (jo soy uruguajjjoo). But then again, uruguayan men are most beautiful around, so you can't go too wrong

Plus, don't be so worried about not understanding, just being there will make it sooo much clearer to you, even if you decide to pick Spain, you'll get spanish spanish really quickly from being immersed in it.

I really really really wanna go to costa rica, but I don't know how to get there (ie job). I have an associate from Peru and his spanish is very easy to understand.

Argentina......don' they use a form of vosotros, voz I think? I heard that wasn't a good place to go.

My second option is mexico...i have a very easy time understanding mexican spanish.

My friend from Colombia says Colombian spanish is the most perfect spanish. Kind of like how people say the Midwesterners in America speak the most perfect english...

they do. vos=tu.

my aunt was in Buenos Aires a couple months ago and she said it was beautiful, the spirit is kinda miserable given their recent bankrupcy but other than that, it's always had the reputation to be the most decently behaved country in Latin America. :D

Well... not to blow my own horn but I know for a fact that we costaricans speak excellent spanish ... its not that its better or worse than other countries (Colombian spanish is very alike as well) .. the thing's ours is more "universal" .. with this I mean its easier for a mexican/argentinian/spanish person to understand US than US to understand them because of the words they use and stuff ... so yeah ...

In here there's an infinite number of Spanish Academies .. some mix activities such as extreme sports or surf of visiting the Natl Parks or even staying with a local family !

Hum ... If I had to study spanish ... I think I'll go somewhere in Cetral Valley of the Middle Pacific or Guanacaste!

G'luck and EVERYONE feel free to contact me for anything!

yeah i agree with this.. it does sound beautiful. i'd say argentina or like lots of people here have already said, costa rica. the accents there aren't difficult to understand, they're easier than mexican for example. although i've never found any place in spain with a difficult accent

i hope it goes well dlg :flower:

It all depends where you want to be, South America or Europe. I don't know much about Spain, but I have many friends from South America and I have traveled there many times. In Argentina, Buenos Aires is like New York City. It's amazing and beautiful, and for me they speak the best spanish. In Uruguay there is Punta del Este, maybe one of the most beautiful beaches in South America. And you are right next to Southern Brazil (the best part). Mexico is great, but if you are from the US you can go there at any time. Panama is just like the US, and they pretty much speak spanglish. Colombians speak really sexy spanish, but I don't think it is the safest place to go and study. Ecuador is really nice too it's a smaller country and the people are so friendly. Well I don't really know, but if you do go to South America, choose a country where you have a beach! B)

I want to travel to South America for sure. Its one of my thing to do within 10 years

Spain!!
You couldn't understand it?Really?

I think you should go to Spain cause that's were the language comes from, it all starts there so well I mean I think you should go for them country were the language originated from. Plus, I love their accent and I heard that there is this place in Spain(I am sure it's Valladolid) and that's were the BEST spanish is spoken.

Don't think so, how can it be that the best Spanish is not spoken in Spain?I mean is their language, is like french spoken in Senegal can't be compared to french here in France. Accents are totally different.

I think any country you go to you are going to learn excellent spanish. Spain, Mexico, Panama or Bolivia. Accent's are going to be differnt, but that doesn't really make a huge difference. It's like saying don't go to New York to learn English, you need to be in Texas or England. Some words will be differnt, and accents but anyplace the language is spoken you are going to learn, and since it isn't your native language wherever you go (within Spanish speaking countries) you will adapt with accents and such.

Ok ... let explain with a word in english:

knickers = undergarments in the UK
Thong = undergarments in the US
Thong = sandals in Australia

The same thing happens in spanish ... with words or "dialects" spanish from Colombia and Costa Rica is understood much easier universally

hi dlg!! im from mexico and i definetly think this is a good place to learn spanish... from people i've heard speaking argentinian or costarican spanish, i think people in south america speak VERY fast and not so clearly.... mexican spanish is more accentuated.. and very marked (i dont know if thats how its said in english)... i think here is a good place.... but i will specially recomend you to visit MONTERREY... which is where i live... or guadalajara is a good and nice place also... not mexico city.. its very dangerous (robberys, asaults, kidnapping.. etc..) and lots of traffic and polution...... but maybe beaches like cancun, los cabos.. etc.. would be nice!
but generally i think mexico is a really good place to learn it!!! really.... there's a boy in my highschool that was from belgium i think.. and in only 2 or 3 months he learned to speak almost perfect spanish!!! i think thats good... any doubts just ask me!!! :flower:
