What is Emo?

I do, It means you're straight edge, they use XXX as a symbol of 'drugfree' mostly also vegan.

No drugs, no alcohol, sometimes no sex either.

I saw an emo today, and the whole time he was in front of me ... ... he was fixing his hair so they could strategically fall on half of his eyes....

... something else- I am not sure if its Emo, the "x" marks on the hands?... does anyone know what I am talking about?

in my town that just means ur underage (at concerts they put x's on your hands to show you can't have alcohol...and at house parties x's mean you paid to get alcohol....)

The X means straight-edge, but it originates from the x's at concerts to mark anyone who can't drink. It means that they don't take any drugs, don't drink, don't smoke and don't have casual sex.

I don't see why they can't just do it without being 'straight-edge' or drawing on their hands though.

I'm a former self-mutilator and let me tell you I f*cking hate the generalizations a lot of cutters get. I never did it for attention, actually the first person who found out was 6 months after starting, and by accident. Besides, even if they do cut for attention, they probably need help also.

Wait the x was already covered.

I find this a funny thread. I'm not much of an emo fan myself, but I am a myspacer.

i really don't want to jump into this discussion because i think a lot of what is being said here is ridiculous. i just wanted to point out that 'they' can, and do. most of my friends, including myself, are 'straight edge' and have been since forever. it's just another label to give to people. i certainly don't call myself straight edge. it's just a way of life for some people.

being straight edge doesn't necessarily mean being abstinent. you're right, it originated that underaged kids in bars couldn't legally drink, and has since generated into being basically drug/drink/smoke free (usually forever but not necessarily) but doesn't always mean vegan or abstinent. i know plenty of straight edge kids who sleep around. i'm not trying to be a jerk, i just wanted to put that out there.

ok, carry on.

Ya, that is what my bro told me (who is younger than I and not stuck in a cubicle 5 days a week)...

Yeah, I realise that different people take straight-edge to different levels of strictness.

By 'they' I was referring to the people who do call themselves 'straight-edge', rather than just people who don't smoke/drink/take drugs, but don't feel the need to show it off. I know several people who don't drink or smoke or take drugs, I've never smoked or taken drugs. None of them call themselves straight-edge, or feel any need to show it off, its just a healthy lifestyle.

Its just that by calling yourself straight-edge you seem to be jumping on a bandwagon slightly, rather than committing to a healthy lifestyle for more legitimate reasons. You probably wouldn't get the problems that some hard-line straight-edgers cause without such an obvious group. You don't see just healthy people beating others up because they don't commit to the same lifestyle.

Edit: In response to #111

I need to start drawing x's on my hands! :p

I think the difference between a straight-edge and other people who just lead a healthy life style is that
1. straight-edgers are into the punk rock/hardcore scene and
2. straight-edgers are usually proud of their life style, and promote it... ex.: the X on the hands and other sxe [means straight-edge] tatoos, t-shirts, whatever. They're more enthusiastic about it.

Actually I could, tecnically, be considered one...
but I don't know, I just fall into the category I guess... I like the whole sxe thing, but it's not like I thought "I think I'm gonna go straight-edge". I'm just a girl who doesn't smoke, drink, do drugs or have casual sex, who's a vegan and is into punk... But it's just me, it's not like I decided "I'm gonna do what it takes to be a sxe". Which I think is part of being sxe, you know, actually making the choice to be one, choosing to follow this way of thinking, and promoting it.

:)

 OMG man, that's pretty damn funny. I think the more tame cuts in the video are fine, though. But some are definitely pretty bad.

Karma to you for posting that.

I thought that was a hilarious video. They refer to themselves as scene, and say they are oh-so-honest and know the world. They say they are alternative, but they are everywhere and I hate it.
