What is Emo?

god damn, i read that emo kit thing and apparently i'm a lot more emo than i thought i was, but in my defense

My hair is naturally black.
My jeans are apc new standards, slim but not skin-tight.
I have converse shoes because they're cheap and good for walking in rainy weather.
My parents bought my corolla in 98 and I had no say over it.
Ok, ok, I picked out the black-rim glasses, just 'cause river cuomo had them.
I was known to listen to SDRE in the mid to late 90's.

I always knew one day I would be cool :)

don't knoe whether this is the right section to write this in, but could someone explain what is EMO???? thanks

Lets resurrect this thread

What are everyone's favorite emo bands?

Mine are The Movielife, Early November, The Spill Canvas...just to name a few..

The only emo band i've really listened to is The Get Up Kids and I actually kind of like them.
Anyway, with the whole emo style thing, in my university, I can't tell the emos from the scene kids anymore  because I have a friend who's coworker considers himself emo, yet another person I know who looks emo is actually scene. Sometimes it just gets too confusing for my little head LOL!

it does get confusing as far as the style goes..i feel like some of the emo kids were tapped into the whole 'tapered' jean look well before the fashion industry caught wind..but then again punk was all about tight jeans in the 80s too..

i think that the emo look works for some people and if its their thing then go with it!

I thort emo was over were i live .. until i saw the new first years in my college litterally 99% of them are emo ... bah so unorginal

and if the people in work call me emo one more time .. bones are getting broken hehe

I cna imagine my kids in the future going mummy were you an emo ?? I can see them as the to the '00s as the mods were to the 60's hippys to the 70's etc.

Someone mentioned earlier that fugazi were emo and I don't want to get all obsessed with genres but I don't want people to get the wrong idea about an amazing band. Okay, Fugazi aren't and never were emo! One of the members went on to form Rites of Spring which is considered to be the band that offset emo music. Not that I have a problem with emo. The only issue i have with it is the poseur attitude that always seems present in people who are emo and the tendency for these people to be ultra whiny. I think emo is just a sign of affluence and the fact that our generation of kids are not moblised in taking action against all the atrocities in the world at the moment means that instead they end up writing about girlfriends and trivial stuff. Have you noticed how in the 60s there was a mass movement against the government with Vietnam etc that thousands of students and teenagers got really involved in, protesting etc and now....what? theres hardly anything despite what the British and American government are doing. The 60s produced some amazing music because of the student movement and all the protesting. Now generally speaking, i feel as though my generation is so introspective. we don't seem to want to stand up to anything anymore. I have gone so off topic I dont even know what this thread is about anymore. Sorry.

Oh and I know where you're coming from but I have to disagree with you. We remember those mods and hippies because they were part of something bigger as I mentioned above. They were about a revolution and a new way of life that came as a reaction to all the crap that was going on back then. It wasnt just about style, it had real substance too. Emo to me seems totally self involved and ultimately more about style than substance. That's why I get annoyed with the millions of teenagers listening to music that isnt inspiring or revolutionary when theer are musicians out there like Kathleen Hanna who are actively trying to change things but who arent given the recognition they deserve.
