This is Emo, right?

^ Yeah, that guy is VERY emo. The girl, however, is a bit of a scene/emo cross I would say.

I'm personally not a fan of emo fashion... scene, however is really cute ^_^

That video is hilarious!

Most kids tend to grow out of emo at around college age, as is the same with the majority of teenage fads (see also 'skater'...)

The problems arise with those who continue to dress according to emo through to university, by which age they should have developed the maturity to realise that in their vast quest to become 'different' they have acheived the opposite by conforming to yet another of societies pigeon holes...which is kinda what the emos claim to rebel against?! think about it...

I feel emo is dying down a bit. It's starting to be replaced by something else.

î don´t know whx they start to dress up... i think most peopkle over here (germany) do it because it´s "cool" and they lissten to such kind of music?
and yeah i think they wanna be different... but these days "different" is so average

A 90s Backstreet Boys-listening teen would be a different teen these days. She'd be a freak!

Exactly!

I dress the way I want to dress, not the way I want people to interpret me.

Dressing according to a stereotype is such is barrier, people just assume that you are going to act a certain way because you dress a certain way. As sad as that is, if you conform to a stereotype then you have to accept that people will make presumptions about your character.

I'm all for people dressing the way they want to dress, but teenagers today face such pigeon holing by society, true rebels should break down these constraints.

But unfortunately, as WhiteLinen so rightly pointed out, when today's rebels are backstreet boys fans, what chance do we stand?!

There is no such thing as a true rebel anymore. There is no such thing as original thought. The only way an individual can be unique is to be themselves on there terms, but due to mass consumption and the media brainwashing that we are plagued with everyday this becomes a battle that no one is willing to fight.

Thats so true.

I hate being a teenager in today's society. Life is such a battle. One the one hand there is considerable pressure to stand out and be different, but on the other hand, we are expected to confirm, or else face exclusion. It's a no win situation.

well there is. its about developing your interests, through films, novels, art galleries, museums, friends, family, your heritage. i will be the first to admit i am not perfect but i would way rather be me at the end of the day than anyone else. there are a lot of lost arts out there that should be part of daily life. they make us who we are. dinner parites, letter writing, tea time, luncheons ect....i just think everyone is scared of who they really are. its a shame.

 Exactly! I love it when teens are interested in arts and culture. But is not really relistic to expect that of 15 year olds, since they are still learning who they are as a person. The wole 'being' Emo, Goth or whatever there is this is part of devoloping yourself, lets be honest, there are very little people who are 'emo' there whole life, its a 'fase'.
I started to get interested in arts, culure and politics when I was about 17/18, and I'm 19 now. At a certain point of your live you are confident enough to be yourself and see all the other aspects of life.

I think punk is the exception to the rule that it's a teenage phase (to some extent). Punk has substance: ethics and a true sense of rebellion play a huge role which is why you'll see men and women into their 20s/30s etc still punks and still believing in the punk ethic. Even if they don't dress like it. Emos/goths etc don't tend to survive past the teen years because there's no substance. I think i sort of wrote the same thing on the page before actually hehe.

i disagree, i think a lot of people get stuck in a genre and than are to afraid to change the way they are because of what there peers find to be acceptable. sub-cultures act as a community so as soon as you try to remove yourself from the "culture" you have to venture out on your own. i believe for a lot of young adults that can be frightening.
