Which designer(s) at the moment do you think has the most influence on what people wear today?

IMO :-

Miuccia Prada
Nicolas Ghesquiere
Consuela Castiglione
Marc jacobs

Also - what do people think about whether its the designers that truly influence what we wear, or those celebrities that everyone copies (kate moss/sarah jessica parker etc).

Interested to hear opinions....

I definately think Miuccia has the largest impact overall. It was a toss up between her and Marc. I think Nicholas and Consuela only reach a certain level of fashion minded people, but what Prada does and Marc Jacobs (and Marc by Marc and LV) does somehow reaches all segments of people at some point and to some degree.

To the second question...I think it's a combination of the two. I think celebrities are just final products of a lot of hard work on the part of designers, stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, personal trainers and plastic surgeons. The celebrity is just the showcase for the designer. So to say that the public is influenced by celebrity, well yeah, but that's how the majority of the public learns about high fashion.

I agree with you on both counts. Tom Ford is probably up there too. I have a soft spot for Marni & Balenciaga so tend to be more influenced by their looks than other people may be.

I know you are right about the celebrity thing but I am just finding it too overpowering - yu can't get away from them! There are pictures of them clogging up more & more magazines. it puts me off a label if I know that they have courted a celebrity too much, but people just cannot get enough. Its too much about selling & publicity & hype & not enough about beautiful clothes.

I'd say overall it's neck and neck between Marc and Miuccia. Marc has definitly been at the forefront of the vintage trend of the last few years. Miuccia has in more recent seasons. Miuccia also had a lot to do with the super modern trend of the late ninties. So I'd say out of those, they're the most influential. Definitly agree, Tom Ford is also up there with them. I'd say out of all of the big name designers, they're probably in the top five.

I think it's a tight race between Miuccia Prada and Marc Jacobs. For god's sake, who can compete with labels such as Prada and Louis Vuitton in today's fashion world? Those names are so famous that one or two bad collections can do no wrong to the designers (especially when you have really talented ones like Marc and Miuccia, who rarely flounder). Look at all the fakes on the market, aren't they trying to copy pradas, vuittons or armanis. Who would try to fake them if they are not selling!

forgot to mention one thing. Brands like Prada and LV appeal to mass consumers due to their globalized reputation while Balenciaga is somewhat more known to fashionistas and people who know the industry so that's why the sales figures are so much different. Speaking of the quality of the designs, I think Nicolas is doing a terrific job? Can it be compared to what Miuccia and Marc has done, I think yes!

Not to sound like a parrot, but it is a toss up between Marc and Muccia. I would have to go with Marc though because he is behind not only the Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs lines (which a lot of younger girls will cite as their favorite line) but also Louis Vuitton. Yes, Tom ford is definitely in the top five. And although this may get me a lot of grief from people on this Web site, I don't really like Balenciaga. I think the greatness of it has been assigned is totally overblown. Just my opinion.

I agree. :flower:

Definately Jacobs and Miuccia. Prada and LV are known even to people who are clueless about fashion. They are household names. Jacobs has more of a tie with pop culture (specifically american pop culture) His marc jacobs and marc lines are more young spirited, he uses celebrities in LV ads, he appeals to people who wouldn't even buy his clothes.

Whoever advertises most in magazines, which at this point is LV,Prada and Gucci (I'd give much less credit to the designers themselves, and more to the advertisings budgets of the conglomerates behind them).

on the list, marc jacobs has had the biggest affect on american fashion simply because of how many places copy him and how ubiquitous he made louis vuitton...

prada i think has influenced the way a certain type of woman thinks about clothes...but she's no where near as influential as say, tom ford, who i think set the standard for how every woman wanted to look (whether they knew it or not) when they went out.

I thought so too. A new guy at the office, he's very nice and all, didn't know what Prada was. I was in shock.

Maybe he's been living under a rock.

i think Tom Ford or gucci if i may say everyone knows abt gucci. If you come here not everyone knows abt marc jacobs, probably lv. Prada is also well known and versace but they dont know donatella

Marc Jacobs without a doubt

edit: about the other bit of the question, i think that depends a lot on the person, some people buy what's in store, some others want what their favorite celebrity is wearing, some just look at magazines, and some others just like different stuff (take Kate Moss an as example).

i personally think i do a bit of everything (magazines, underground stuff and even certain celebrities).

of all the labels mentioned in this thread I think MJ has the most influence on what people wear and Tom Ford has has most influence on what people aspire to wear.

I mentioned Balenciaga mainly because Kate Moss trotted around in lots of balenciaga last year and (as usual ) she has spawned a real move towards slouchy-wear so indirectly i think Balenciaga has influenced (esp. in Uk & france).

Its instances like that where its difficult to see the true origin of the influence...the creator or the celebrity wear-er...

This is true and also a little sad because then it would be like they aren't so much recognised for their designs anymore but just by how "everyone" likes them. Gucci should probably be up there on the list.

Anyway for me, Prada is great for the womenswear because I think her designs are kind of strange. She seems like she's playing with her work ^_^ I was even surprised that during the time I started to get into fashion I found out that the designer that kept catching my eye was Prada, the Prada. I always thought beforehand Prada would really be something else.

isn't this thread about who has the most influence? or is it about who's most-known? well, i suppose the two things go hand in hand.

i would have to agree and say that Miuccia Prada has indeed had the most influence on fashion. high street fashion at least. and i believe it all had to do with her ladylike look. thank goodness she was the first one to recognize it wasn't the best. i'm fond of the trend of mismatched charms she started...or solidified.

I think it depends on which houses... I, personally, won't accessories myself in LV until my twenties, but I would in MiuMiu.

I think Karl Langerfeld is worth counting too... :ermm:

i believe it all depends on the season..
overall, i think Prada is very strong, but i dont see them influencing ss06 in a big way.. like it or not, Galliano/Dior has an all time tremendous influence, Jean Paul Gaultier but in a very subtle way..

for ss06, i see strong pull from ysl, fendi and balenciaga
dior is also there..
d&g and mark jacobs seem quite big for a younger market
