why do you like/ hate marc jacobs?

I've not been a big fan of Marc Jacobs ever since I read the article/interview in which he said that he wasn't interested in menswear and doesn't really do anything with his menswear collections (including his eponymous label and for LV). He has a design team do it for him. His women's wear collections are interesting, but I've stopped taking much interest in his menswear for this reason. If a designer doesn't really feel attuned or "interested" in a particular segment of the market, then why is he putting things out under his name in that market?

For example, you don't see Manolo Blahnik releasing watches or handbags or inkpens or wallpaper because he only likes designing shoes.

Just my opinion, though. And I will admit that the design team does some interesting work, however, but I've not bought much beyond the inexpensive benefit tshirt he did for Cancercare a few years ago.

I like Marc Jacobs a lot for several reasons: his shoes are always soooo cool and they match the quirkiness of the designs in his namesake collections. I think he has a lot of original ideas and I generally love the younger feel of his clothing. The stuff he makes at Louis Vuitton is also very nice for the most part--I think accessories are really a strong point for him. The collaboration with Murakami for LV was really innovative but at this point I really wish the print would disappear because it just looks tacky at this point in most cases.

I found an excerpt from that interview that I mentioned (it was in the interview for which a link was provided in tfs post about which designers were gay/straight. Anyway, this interview was in Butt magazine):

Excerpt follows:

That National Geographic collection that you did for Louis Vuitton men’s wear this summer, was that your intuition? I love that collection.
MJ: Yeah, me too. You know I’m very happy with the team that does men’s wear for us, with Keith, and with Olivier and Willy and Peter. I sometimes wish I were more involved. but men’s wear is not something I’m really good at. In fact, men’s fashion frightens me. I really find men who are fashionably dressed terribly unsexy. I think fashion is something for women. It’s a terribly sexist thing to say, but I just don’t find fashionably dressed men attractive, and men who take too much time in the bathroom and spend too much time on their body, I find a bit poncy and silly. It just doesn’t turn me on. So I let it go to the people who find it a turn-on and who are really passionate about it.
It’s weird to have your name put on the collections they make, isn’t it?
It is. I feel a certain amount of shame. I feel a bit fraudulent in saying that I’ve been doing this men’s wear collection when I haven’t had daily involvement in it. Although I can say very honestly I don’t do every part of the women’s collection, I am involved in every aspect of the women’s collection. But with the men’s, it’s a bit different. I feel like a bit of a fraud, and that’s what’s tough for me. I don’t know what other designers feel, but I just don’t like to pretend that I’m something that I’m not. I’m not superman and I don’t do everything.

So... after reading that... I had a little trouble paying MJ's prices...

Oh god. That makes me so angry. He is an absolute idiot. It's really disgusting that he professes to have no interest in it but still produces it, solely, presumably, for the purpose of making huge amounts of money. He doesn't find men "a turn on" if they're into fashion. (Phew, I'm safe.) Fashion is for women. So he delegates to a group of men who find it sexy. Why does fashion have to be primarily about sex. It's not for me, nor is it for a lot of men who are "into" fashion. It's so patronising and insulting to normal straight guys who just like clothes.

Some of us speak of integrity in fashion on this site. If you want a definition of a complete absence of integrity, you'll find eveything you need to know in that interview.

I hate Marc Jacobs because none of his clothes fit my body properly

I hate him because the fashion world thinks he's the biggest thing to happen to fashion, a sort of saviour who has come to save us and this is evident in the reveiws he gets every season even ig the collection is not that good.

Sometimes, with his menswear, you can find some really smart, versatile, classic pieces that really are great additions to any wardrobe. For the most part, it's good American sportswear, even when he's stealing and Frankensteining things together. I've some jackets that are part Mao, part safari, part band leader--all over the place. I wear them to death.

Look at my avatar. That's why.

Don't understand - it's Paris hilton right? And does that mean you like or hate MJ?

i love marc jacobs shoes, they not only look good, but also the quality is superb!

I don't really see why Marc Jacob is so popular, he seems more of a stylist to me than Miuccia but perhaps I just prefer the Prada aesthetic. I see a lot of his clothes as vintage rip offs and the style is so trendy. The prices, everytime I see the prices of a Marc Jacob piece I am surprised, so expensive.

I think some of the prices are reasonable, other things I think "Good Lord for this???"

But I love his clothes, they're quirky and yes a lot are vintage inspired but well as you can tell by username... :-)

I think his clothes and bags leave ALOT to be desired. His shoes however I am very very fond of :F

I wonder how the line would be without MJ working for LV. I think he sometimes has to pit the two lines against each other. At a time when he could be introducing a timeless, classic sense of luxury into his own line, it seems, sometimes, he can't or won't for the sake of LV. He has had to make the two very distinctive and different from each other in terms of quality, not only in the fabrications but also in the designs. I've always felt that in an ideal sense, the Marc Jacobs customer is not the Louis Vuitton customer.

I actually have no problem with what he's saying about men's clothes. It's pretty honest, although ideally he could at least be kinda stylist ala Tom Ford
And let's face it, if we were him we would do the same thing. Why NOT have a menswear line, except it robs you of your integrity? There are many reasons WHY.. as I'm sure you'll agree. He feels bad about it yeah but of course he's gonna have a men's line! No problem here :)

It's not like mrs Prada and others has anything to do with their menswear line either.

Not that I like his clothes though..

Actually, the best thing about LV menswear is Olivier Rizzo. If it weren't for him,I don't think there would be anything to it at all except really expensive Banana Republic clothes.

But for he to admit that, says alot about who he is and what he does. I mean,he IS a fraud! Not just in his disinterest for menswear but the way he blatantly copies vintage clothing.

The clue is in the question as they say.....

His clothes are ok...but I always find myself really liking his bags and shoes.

I don't mind some of his designs - I think some are honestly great...but lately, I think he's been on crack. I don't get half the things he puts out these days. But his funky, eclectic style has been a favourite of a friend of mine, and she carries off that idea very very well, so I don't have much of an opposition to his stuff. ...Except what he's come out with lately.
