Wisdom Teeth

Hi! This is a question for people who have had their wisdom teeth taken out. I got my widsom teeth taken out yesterday and the doctor didn't close up the holes where the teeth were removed from which suprised me so I was wondering if thats normal and if so how long it takes to heal?

you mean closing it as in stitching it? if so,yes,that's normal. they don't do it because it is supposed to heal naturally. but they do give you gauze to cover so you won't risk a dry socket. but otherwise i believe you risk it getting infected if they were to stitch it like an oral surgery. it only took a week for mine to close completely.

OOOh did you get pain meds? Fun. Make sure you use the syringe (they should have given you one) to rinse out those holes after eating so nothing gets trapped down there...that would be a bad infection.

I had 3 removed...actually don't remember where the 4th is It hasn't bothered me though. I didn't get sticthes or a syringe to clean with, but I couldn't eat for a whole week afterwards, so nothing could get stuck anyway. It was very bad when I had two removed in one session, I didn't eat for two weeks, kept fainting all the time and I ended up with pneumonia

Oh no Ida! Yeah I've just been eating like pudding and milk shakes...stuff that just goes right now! They didn't give me a syringe to rinse but I could try just swishing around some water in my mouth. I'm in so much more pain today and I don't think the pain med works well but hopefully it won't last too long. Thanks for the replies!

Mine are just coming in, but they aren't bothering me. Do I have to get them taken out?! I have no insurance to pay for it, so I'm hoping the answer is no.

I always tell everyone to get stitches like I did ... better safe than sorry. Just be careful & do what they told you to do to avoid dry socket ... no straws, right?

To the question above, you don't have to get your wisdom teeth out unless there's a problem. Two of mine were growing at a right angle to my other teeth & pushed them forward. I delayed getting it taken care of for a few years, and unfortunately many years later the teeth they pushed are still at the wrong angle I thought they would readjust, but clearly I was wrong about that. If this happens to you, go ahead & git 'er done ...

There's no reason to remove them unless they are causing you problems, such as tooth aches, head aches and infections. Head aches can be a sign of your wisdom teeth growing in the wrong angle.

Thank the lord! After reading above posts about stitches and not eating it made me a bit nervous. I'm just worried I'll be too late and they will mess up my teeth. I'm pretty fond of my smile, and it would be tragic if it went and got ruined.

A simple X-ray should show what position they are in & if they'll be problematic ... talk to your dentist, but I think the bite-wings would show this ...

The longer you wait, the worse it will be. It's not that bad if you do it before they are impacted. Just do it! Think how relieved you will be when you don't have to worry about it any more.

I have to tell you these past two days have been hell for me, more so than the first two days. Soooo much pain. I left work early yesterday and didn't go in today. I was crying this morning I was in so much pain so I went back to the dentist and he gave me Percocet, and even that isn't working great. I have to take two instead of one just to get moderate relief. He said that one tooth in particular was hard to get out so that could be why, but I think I have dry socket. The nurse said that most patients call the 4th day post-op like me complaining of the pain. I'm really hoping it will start to get better tomorrow.

Don't leave them if they are causing any problems. I did, and then had to go in hospital & have them out under anaesthetic. Had to stay in 2 days as they wouldn't stop bleeding. I had stitches, but my dentist had a job taking them out as my gums had started growing over them! (Big shudders at memory)

No, haha not exactly.
You should usually get it pulled out immediately before it grows in and pushes out your other teeth and makes your teeth look crooked.

I got mineses removed.

I actually boned my dentist (prior to the tooth removal, completely unrelated) and later I was like "O hay wanna do my teefs" he was really great about it. He was like "youre gonna love the anastetic" HE WAS RIGHT. HEAVEN...

also having a dentist as a good, personal friend means I got the HOOKUP w/ pain meds, I have like a stacker jar full of Oxycontins.

I looked like Kanye west for like 3 days, I got it done on friday and the wounds were closed on Sunday. I was back in business the next week...

ahh wisdom teeth. i had 6, yes 6! i got them removed at an oral surgeon and did get stitches seeing how not even all of them had grown in yet. really, it's better to get them removed as early as you can, especially if they could damage your smile. the first few days are awful, but it'll get better, i promise! just hang in there and take your meds. try to keep your mouth as clean as possible. getting an infection sucks even more than having them removed.

They don't neccessarily push out your other teeth They just do it in some cases, not all. We're all different.

This is crazzzyyyy. I deff don't have the insurance, or the money, to pay to get them removed. I don't want to have crooked teeth, either. Is it completely necessary for me to get them removed??? Theres alot of different opinions going on.
