Evening wrap, 1954–55
Cristobal Balenciaga (French, born Spain, 1895–1972)
Pink silk faille
Gift of Baroness Philippe de Rothschild, 1973 (1973.21.3)

[FONT=geneva,arial,sans-serif]Conversant with Spanish ceremonial and vernacular dress as an expression of European regionalism, Balenciaga likewise respected Orientalist effects. The cocoon shape of the back alludes to the way a Japanese woman's outer kimono accommodates over her obi to create an elegant arc. More evidently, in emphasizing the nape of the neck by dropping the bias-rolled collar, he evokes the kimono's band neckline, which dips at the back.

What is the best book released of his work? I am looking for something more on the visual side, with a lot of photos of the garments, not a book that is mainly filled with text. Recommendations, reviews? Do you if there are new books to be published?

^ Thanks for the karma WhiteLinen!

I haven't read all of them, so I can't really say. Hommage à Balenciaga has more text than the Assouline book, but there are far more detailed photos of the garments. I remember reading somewhere that JR1 had Balenciaga Paris. That one, I didn't read, so you could ask him what he thinks of it.

I LOVE IT! Really everything is so beautifull! I like the Dress ensemble, ca. 1965–66 the most I think. It's so feminime

My father gave me the book 'Creators' by Paul M. Johnson and they had a section on Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Dior. It was pretty good. Balenciaga really was THE master.

I looked at every picture...and imagined myself in every outfit! That was fun.

i'm getting sensory overload... all the pictures are amazing! cristobal is just... something else.
