2012 : is the world ending? and what happens after that?

^ All depends on why it's ending ... there are lots of possible reasons (if not all) that we could do something about.

ive been watching a lot of shows lately that have nothing to do with 2012, but the world ending in general, and one of the reasons was that the sun will become hotter and eventually start growing in size, swallowing up anything in its path.

if thats the way the world is going to end someday, i dont think we can stop that ;)

Yes, but that is suppose to happen in thousand of years not in the near future ...

Have you guys watched this already, it's incredible:

The sun will expand, but that means that the 'inhabitable zone' where planets can sustain life will shift farther out. Earth may not lie in that zone anymore, but it could benefit other satellites in the solar system. But that isn't going to happen for a while, a meteor strike could wipe things out long before that.

If we make it that long, a big round of self-congratulation will be in order ...

well i did point out that it didnt have to do with 2012 :lol:

i forget what it was that i saw..
but something about every 11 years this happens and the last one was in 2001, so the next one is happening in 2012..
i must find out what that is..
unless someone else knows what im talking about.

Lets see, by that time some millions of years into the future^_^, we should be able to travel at light speeds to reach other galaxies to find a new planet, or better yet why not just create our own planet. Anyways, I'm glad I won't live in the days where we have to worry about getting swallowed by the sun, or getting hit by gamma rays, that would be nasty.

not to burst ya bubble, but travelling at light speed is impossible for anything which is made of matter :)

If only sarcasm were detectable through the computer^_^. When I added the stuff about creating our planets I thought it was a dead giveaway that I wasn't being serious but some people believe anything.:flower:

im bit of a skeptic i guess when it comes to the end of the world.
what makes them think that on this specific date the world will come to an end and not tomorrow for some unexplainable reason ?

its just hard to say until it happens.
and if it does, i hope it happens fast and it wont be a painful, long death

I've been thinking about the discussion here over it. Honestly, there is an equal chance of it happening as much as it won't happen.

It is like my views on religions. There is a good chance of a god or gods as there isn't. Also, there is a good chance that ALL religions are real as much as they aren't real.

So, I think that we have nothing to worry about since we will ALL be f*cked.

I don't understand why people are convinced the world is going to end just because an ancient civilization's calendar is ending. Our calendar ends every year and as far as I'm concerned, we're still alive...

About the Mayan calendar, it doesn’t really mean it’s the end of the world. Mayan calendar does not end in 2012 at all, that it is like the odometer on your car, as each section of the odometer reaches 9 and then clicks over to 0, the next number to it starts a new cycle, so that when all the numbers again reach 0 all the way across the odometer.

I guess they stoped making more calendars because the Mesoamerican civilization ended with the arrival of the Spaniards in the early 16th century.
Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization , said that "for the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle". However, she considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Some people joke that it ends on 2012 because the Mayans ran ou of space to put in more numbers, or symbols.
