2013 Costume Institute Exhibit : "PUNK: Chaos To Couture"

the book

A book, Punk: Chaos to Couture, by Andrew Bolton, with an introduction by Jon Savage, and prefaces by Richard Hell and John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols), will accompany the exhibition. This publication will be illustrated with photographs of vintage punks and high fashion. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the $45 catalogue (hard cover only) will be distributed worldwide by Yale University Press.

Would love to get my hands on this!

softie, siouxsie certainly made her own indelible influence early on being part of that whole movement and running round with the pistols amongst the "bromley contingent". and the music early on was certainly derived from the punk movement especially the scream and join hands eras. so yes she is criminally ignored from this!!

as for the invite list...looks like a lot of boring same ol,same ol to me. but should get some definite attention.

That is the most hideous, amateurish invitation I have ever seen. I'm starting to feel like a lot of people who should be involved in this show will simply be forgotten about. There are just too many people to recognize in regard to the punk movement...

OMG---it says performance underwritten by Givenchy...

WHAT performance?!?!...
:bounce::bounce::bounce:

You guys think they'll have a livestream for the red carpet again ? Because the guest list really sounds amazing.

Very bored by the guest list so far but I'm still looking forward to watching the red carpet stream! :p

let's just hope that they actually wear something appropriate this time...
and in keeping with the theme...

cause hardly anybody wore anything even remotely punk inspired when the them was anglomania...

and if the show is about how punk has influenced fashion today and no one wears anything remotely punk, well...
i'd call that an epic fail on everyone's part...
...

Is that really the guest list, though? Remember when when a list leaked a few years ago and it was really just the Benefit Committee? Loads of people from Keira Knightley to Cate Blanchett were on that and they didn't turn up.

And no one ever really dresses for the theme (unless you are called Christina Ricci).

that list does seem pretty random and out of the sky. i saw serena and venus on there and i know for a fact that both are playing a tournament at madrid that week...which is mandatory. so they will definitely not be present at all.

but i don't think anybody will really dress up like that unless tilda or chole sevigny shows up. i can kind of see them playing into the punk spirit but most everybody else i imagine will only be there for a great photo op.

^Sad but true. Rooney Mara could show up as Lizbeth and then she'd be right on track. ^_^

truth be told,i wouldn't mind if that pompous twit kanye would go away either.

commander....beyonce perform??!! that would seem rather unfitting at a punk exhibition....

seriously... why aren't they keeping the performers in THEME. Kanye AND Beyonce are inappropriate, and Kim should be blockered from the building.

What is the point of having a punk theme if you can get a punk performer. Patti Smith should be doing some spoken word; Iggy should be making an appearance; someone with some credibility. Even No Doubt have some ska-punkish vibes; let them play. But good lord, NOT Kanye or Beyonce.

i saw that the selecter reformed recently too....the great pauline black was very much part of that era and was instrumental in influencing no doubt's ska-sound. they definitely should have a lot of musicians who were part of the era not just a bunch of random shallow celebs looking for publicity.

I don't see why not she's already there. I still don't get why everyone is stuck on the "theme" down a tee, what does Bruno Mars and Azealia Banks have to do with Prada or Florence Welch with American Women?

It would be a nice added touch if they did have a punk performer but they'll pick a popular artist at the moment like they always do, this year it's Tisci's choice.

At the end of the day the exhibition is what needs to be punk, at the opening night you'll have glamazons polished to perfection and filthy rich superstars wearing custom made pieces quite the opposite of punk.

because i think at the end of the day,the essence and spirit of the punk movement in all its social consciousness, gets lost in all the superficiality. the irony is,punk wholeheartedly anti-superficial....anti-establishment....anti-emperor's new clothes. that's why it worried me originally how this will be conveyed. i would like to see this being shown in the social manner in which it influenced a generation of ideals and individualism.

Well, where would you find artists tha are Prada ? Only artists wearing Prada could perform..?

With punk is different, this year is so turned to music and we see so many references to artists, that they could at least make an effort and put someone punk related performing.
