Addicted to buying fashion magazines, who has the same problem??

you see Borders and all those places where you can sit down and read the magazines are great and all...but nothing beats having the actual magazine at home! :woot:

But the irony is that once you own the magazine and its safely at home, its not a novelty anymore - well personally, I just feel the need to own new magazines....hehe :innocent:

I agree with everything you wrote in this post! :flower:

btw, have you guys ever thought if you now could only keep one magazine and had to throw away the rest of your magazine collection, which one would you keep? (I admit I like thinking about weird "If" questions )

my answer for this would be the first magazine I've ever bought, which pretty much proved that I buy magazines just because I feel the need to own new magazines :ninja:

Oh, it would probably be one of the first Vogue Italias that I bought, I saw it after school one day, and didn't have the money, so my best friend lent me the cash. October 1991. It was on a high shelf and I could barely reach it. All sorts of memories are wrapped up in that one.

I had no idea there was a thread for this.....My problem:
1. I spent 85.89 for magazines on my vacation (It was only four)
2. For some reason Ive yet to get a subscription to any
3. Ill just look at the pictures and then put them on a shelf and forget about it (aside from harpers bazaar- which are short and to the point)
4. If ive already bought two magazines for the month I have to stay away from Barnes and noble for the fear that ill relaspe and buy more ( they are always off on the months so theres always something new.)

I dont spend more than £20 a month but I still think that is a lot. Thank God for The Fashion Spot and people with scanners or Id be spending 3 times that amount easily

this thread is so funny, but scarry at the same time because i totaly relate to you guys. and it's a real problom that i can't help. i subsribe to magazine to save money. it's like the highlight of my month when i get it in the mail. but it's sheer torture waiting days for it to come , i'm like a junkie waiting for my next fix. im now at the point where i can't wait around anymore for my fashion fix, i go and buy tabloides to fill the void until i get my W, Vogue, Baazar, Jane, Tean Vogue, and Elle magazine's. my mom complains about it a lot to the point where i have to hide my mags in my shirt when i come in the house so i don't have to hear her mouth.

i'm now thinking of subscribing to paris vogue, but i don't like the idea of spending 100 something for it. are there any USA people here that subscribe to paris or british vogue? it won't make me feel so bad if i know i'm not the only one crazy enough to pay all that money just for a subsribtion for magazines.

oh, and by the way. i will never subsitute tabloid mags for fashion mags for this point on. i swear!!!!!!!!!! it's such a waste of money

I used to be massively addicted to buying tabloid mags and would get them ALL every single week! It was so expensive, and then I finally learned that they say the same thing each week, they are all the same as one another, they are mostly filled with lies, and I can get the same info for free online! This has made a huge difference in my magazine pile at home and my bank account...not too mention the amount of garbage I expose my brain to!

I spend so much on foreign magazines just for the eds and pictures, and they're expensive too which is definitely not a good thing as far as my mom's concerned :ninja:

One solution to the 'taking up too much space' problem is to edit down a lot of the magazines you feel lukewarm about. You save the cover & choice clippings in a folder with transparent A4 pages, and toss the unwanted pages away for recycling. You get to keep the good bits in an easy-access format, but for one-sixth of the original size.

I keep intact the ones that have a fantastic cover, but if I find a so-so issue that I haven't touched for months, I get great joy from splicing it asunder, and freeing up some space for, er, more magazines.

I also start a separate folder for new ads each season, it's fun to find the best way of sorting them out - leading from one ad campaign to the next, so you get some sort of continuity of colour or mood.

Yea, i am absolutely awful! I religiously buy American Vogue and Teen Vogue and subscribe to InStyle, Harpers. Mostly buy UK Vogue too as well as Vogue Paris. Occasionaly Vanity Fair too. I'm running out of space!

In the past six months i have bought the following magazines:

VOGUE UK: Feb, March, April, May, June, July
VOGUE USA: March, April, May, June
VOGUE PARIS: April, May, June/July
VOGUE ITALY: March, April, May, June
W: April,June, July
Harpers Bazaar USA: June, July
Harpers Bazaar UK: June, July

excessive?

^ Average of 4 magazines per month.
That's not that bad.. lol

When I did my taxes this year, and had to go through receipts- there were some months that I spent almost $250 ( A few times MORE!-yikes). On average around $85-$140. I have no other addictions- don't smoke etc... I am a painter-fashion illustrator-so I justify it by thinking as long as I make one painting based on the inspiration this $20 magazine gave me- then I can sell that painting around $200- $2000 and it was worth it. I save mostly the foreign ones that have more then one incredible fashion editorial- ie: select Italian Vogues, all of the LULA's, some Japanese mags like SO-EN, Elle Decoration/Australian Vogue Living, BON, FRENCH, and a few ANOTHER MAGAZINE, Numero, Official. I generally take the images out of the rest and recycle them back.

Recently I noticed a pal of mine has taken all of the clippings of her favorite editorials she ripped from magazines and has sort of glue/shellaced them into journals - and now it looks like a fashion hardcover inspiration book. IF I ever find the time- I'd love to make mine into something.
here's some examples of my fav. Irina L. and a Galliano inspired painting

Oh my god, I thought that I could save up by not bying magazines in summer....how terribly wrong I was. I've bought atleast 10 magazines in June. Oh my god, I feel like listing them all but...I don't even know if I have it that bad. Geez. I need to list them.

If you subscribe, you often get magazines cheaper, especially if you go for the Christmas deals. I'd say magazines on sale in the UK are expensive, so I subscribe to UK Vogue, Vanity Fair, Tatler and Glamour, because there's no way I'd pay full price for all of those each month.

When I see Italian magazines with cover prices of 2 Euros, or US subscription deals of $9, I look on with envious eyes. Things aren't that cheap over here.
