Alessandra Ambrosio’s Brazilian Discovery

Last February, after hearing from multiple trusted sources about the wonders of Trancoso, a small fishing village located in Bahia, on the east coast of Brazil, Alessandra Ambrosio, the supermodel and designer of ále by Alessandra, took a six-day holiday there with her entire family. Her friends recommended she stay at Uxua, a small hotel owned by the former Diesel creative director Wilbert Das and comprised of 11 casas situated on the edge of the Quadrado, Trancoso’s 500-year-old town square. “I was a little concerned because it’s not on the beach,” she admits. But her mind changed as soon as she saw the colorful, charming property and the energy and scenery around it: “It’s pretty incredible,” she says. Ambrosio and her family stayed at two of Uxua’s casas — one that faced the Quadrado and another with a second-story room where her children, Anja and Noah, slept. “My kids loved it because it felt like a little room in a treehouse,” she says.

The family spent its days at the area’s many beaches, accessible either by a short walk from the hotel or by boat, which is how they got to a beach called Espelho (Portuguese for “mirror”). “It’s definitely the most beautiful beach in that area,” Ambrosio recounts. “The water is blue and green, and you can go paddle boarding. It’s just very calm.” Dining highlights of the trip included Uxua’s organic Bahian restaurant — “They have this thing, moqueca, which is something they do with the fish with a lot of tomatoes and peppers; it’s supertasty,” she says — and Capim Santo, which means “lemongrass” in Portuguese. “They have this amazing juice there with lemongrass, the best juice you’ll ever try in your life.”

Ambrosio likened Trancoso’s bohemian feel to that of Ibiza. “Everything is very hippie and simple, but chic. It’s very charming,” she says. The mix of locals selling handicrafts, street vendors hawking food, boys playing soccer and live music in the streets brought her back to her childhood. “The culture reminds me of when I grew up in Brazil, and I wanted my children to live that,” she says. “It’s such a simple life.”
