Alexa Chung

i think it depends who you hang out with, everywhere you go. she went to live in nyc where she can find plenty of people that have a similar style to her, it's not like she went to LA and felt the pressure to be tan and get hair extensions. nyc has a lot of the similar crowds that london has, it's all interchangeable. and with travelling back and forth, i wouldn't say it's a huge effort to remain the same. well the same in some ways, i mean, she used to dress vintage with hints of luella, but on her MTV show and when she started getting a little recognition it was all Chanel and Marni from there. i suppose that came with being more popular and getting more freebies/money to afford these things. or maybe a stylist, i don't know.

She once wrote somewhere (sorry I can't recall the magazine), but she said that there was a pressure to look all glam when she started working for MTV. she did know the pressure because there in on american television, all the hosts had great polished hair and everything, and she didn't. she told she would stick to her own style and I'm proud of her for that :) it takes courage to say 'no. this is me. and nobody can tell me what to do'. and yeah I believe it also depends on who she's hanging out with. her friends seem down to earth too :)

i wish net-a-porter would stock the madewell line but they always add the lines they are going to feature for the fall season in advance. and they've already added them for this season :(

v intriguing article, actually. what I found amusing was the line with her bashing navy blazers, clogs&lumberjack shirts - didnt alexa push these fads herself over the years at one point or another? until now I thought that at least the navy blazers and oversized shirts are essential chung style.

louisbabble, Very true about MTV job; I read that Alexa told them "no stylist; I style myself and wear my own clothes!" And that she did! I think it's very cool.

I disagree that Alexa is not talented or that all she can fall back on is her style. She is a fabulous TV host, so witty and intelligent. I liked her show, although some of the dumb "action" bits were dull, but those were likely engineered by the producers. It was on at the wrong time too, and probably targeted at the wrong demographic. She'd be great hosting a show for 20,30,40 somethings, and perhaps focusing on music and maybe fashion. It seemed a lot of the people she interviewed on her show were TV/film stars. She is also erudite, and writes well. I know when she was planning to going to Uni, her focus was either Literature or Art. So a career in some sort of journalism seems ideal for her, imo.

Finally, not sure I see NYC and London as parallel or having the same crowds. To me, NYC seems to have a more polished fashion set in general, and on the street too, though of course it has a great bunch of fun and quirky 20-30 undergrounders as well. They just seem different to me in some ways, not quite interchangeable.

I agree. with everything you just said.

i don't personally like her style of presenting, having seen (i think!) almost all the TV things she's done...at least in the uk. i couldn't go through a whole episode of it's on with alexa without cringing so i wouldn't know for sure!

i made the parallel of ny and london simply because, although she has a nice style, either of this cities EASILY has a crowd of people that dress similar. i understand that, for a public person like herself, it's refreshing to see her dressing differently from all the other celebrities but in a different context, in a group of people involved in arts, fashion and music, her style isn't entirely original.

you have to think as well that although she is (was?) a guest columnist for vogue, there is a LOT of editing involved in journalism and some times, when a celebrity guest is invited to write for a publication, they might not even do the writing themselves and it's all ghost-written. of course the mag/newspaper wouldn't put that out there in the public!

all i'm saying is that i've been a bit biased and i'm yet to be convinced about her talent!
but you know, to each their own! she is cute, i admit it

I think Alexa's a good presenter, when she presents alone. Whenever she presents alongside another presenter it just feels forced as opposed to when Alexa herself is just reading what's on the script. And I think the same can be said for when she interviews people. It really all depends on who she gets to interview. When she's interviewing John Mayer or Jason Schwartzman the interview is great, but when it's with people who are normally at guard like Lady Gaga or Jesse James it's going to be really hard. Gosh, I remember when she interviewed Jesse James for her show, and he just acted like a complete douche. He was being unbelievable uncooperative and wouldn't talk at all. I was cringing so bad, cause you could see Alexa try so hard to get him to participate in these silly MTV games.

This is probably going to be a hot topic but I have to say it...
I'm probably the only one who gets annoyed when Alex is always mentioned in her articles, because I just feel like Alexa's built up her own merit to where she doesn't have to be known as the girlfriend of the frontman of Arctic Monkeys. I know magazines do that alot with celebrity couples, but I guess I just thought that Alexa would be one of those girls who wanted to be known for more than that. Even when Alexa says she's not going to talk about Alex in her interviews, it just somehow magically happens and now we know they're sleeping patterns or if Alex gets grumpy in the morning.Where as I never hear Alex say anything about her, except for that time when he said that he was lucky to be with a posh girl.

I'm not saying that I don't think it's cute, I just think that she can stand on her own. It's not Bill & Hillary Clinton anymore, it's just now Hillary Clinton. Anyone get what I'm trying to say?

^ They are. Madewell (along with J Crew) is waaaay overpriced for what it is. Expect dresses to be in the mid - $100 range, and t-shirts to be over $50. Too bad because they have adorable clothes. Is she making shoes and accessories for them or just clothing?

Well, if it's in the current Madewell price range, I might be able to afford a couple of items. Her pieces are very wearable and versatile, so it would be worth the money. However, if they up the price b/c it's a special collection... Then NO WAY.

I just read the Vogue article.
Whoever found that suitcase that she lost on the way to Coachella is one lucky lucky person. I hope they appreciate it!

Thanks to everyone that's chipped in about getting the Madewell line shipped to England... I've pleaded with an American friend who's agreed to let me have it shipped to her house! I'm so excited... if there's one piece I need it's the black peter pan collar dress :)

If anything, just looking at the collection is pretty good as it gives ideas for putting similar things together even if you can't get hold of it.

I thought this too! My vintage navy blazer has become my main style staple much like Alexa's was... and you can't diss lumberjack shirts, they go with everything! She'll come running back ;)
