All about being a hipster (not that there's anything wrong with that)

bobo?...never heard of it...
eurotrash is a different kind of hipster...more specific...
more slimy than greasy...LOL...and i think even more revolting...
usually associated with an obnoxious display of wealth which they have done nothing to earn...with a superiority complex and that nauseating sense of entitlement that spoiled rich kids seem to all have... yuck!!

:unsure:are you sure?...i thought so at first too...but she typed it bobo twice...
i don't know...sorry...i thought it might be some other variation i hadn't heard of...

Someone who professes a fervent belief in Communism or any other ideological left-wing doctorine, and listens to music on an iPod.

And rather ambiguous sexualities. At least in the contextual vantge point of Americans.

I saw this couple who may or may not have been a father/son with the same blonde locks, and heinously tight Dolce Gabbana outfits shopping at a Neiman's for Etro, and Paul Smith shirtings.

Obviously one was distinctly older than the other. Both rather muscled.

your guys' stereotypes are horrible
Welcome to tFS, "frenchie"! :ermm: :D

We would love to read your (non-horrible stereotype) definition of a hipster. :flower:

i'm actually really unsure of what a hipster is because i've never met anyone who was actually labeled that but from your descriptions, they sound like my friends; art students, photographers, independent directors..etc. maybe it is because i am friends with many of these so called hipsters that makes me want to defend them as being unfairly judged. i haven't been around long enough to understand the real definiton or see an icon of a true hipster so therefore i cannot contribute in my definition.

what makes a person a hipster? not the definition but how do you guys catagorize them as one? is it because of their hair or clothing? that's what i want to know

as for ranting on their style....

it seems hyprocritical. their "monotonous" style of vintage tees and jeans are almost parallel to the excess amounts of ballet flats and tweed and pearls. i like how they dress. i prefer it to tweed and the whole lady like look. i'll add on more later, my train of thought is slowly dying.

i'm not exactly new here. i've been reading the posts for a while now but i just haven't posted. i'm a regular on the teenvogue forums though, yes, teen i know. those girls by the way are extremely fashionable not just a bunch of juicy couture label sluts...no, head over to ym for that.

frenchie...it has been said over and over...it's the ATTITUDE...
not all art students are hipsters...

only the ones who think they are cooler than anyone who's not...

an overall feeling of superiority and disdain for others...basically...reverse snobism...

 *hypocritical upper crust 20-something uni students - 75% of the people who go to my college* :innocent:

Well, soft has beat me to it, but I was writing this:

In this thread, some people are identifying a hipster style of clothing, and others are referring to a specific and apparently disgustingly superficial and "hipper than thou" subculture that currently exists, notably in Williamsburg in NYC. A third branch is concerned with the historical evolution of the hipsters, who have had different appearances over time, but with similar interests (in leftist politics and the arts.)

It sounds like some people are making fun of hipster dress style but if you read closely you will see that some of these same people incorporate elements of this style into their own style, and are actually making fun of people who merely study and imitate the surface.

And frenchie, who said anything about sex? Where is your mind? ;) :flower:

Being a real, instead of a professed, left-wing radical wouldn't be a very hip thing to do though. I mean they might actually have to stop exploiting the farmers in Afghanistan who grow most of the dope they smoke...

vintage/boho/arty

hipster dress is fine & I rock the vintage hipster [partic 60s/70s but also 80s] everyday so Im at least a self aware hipster in dress.

hipster attitude is something else & its a huge insult to call someone a hipster in nyc as it connotes superficial vapid positions on music art & politics that are never informed and never insightful or intelligent.

its like calling someone a 'student' in UK: it connotes naivete and affected positions on all matters.
the clothes are fine- the mindset is immature unintelligent derided and deeply unpopular.

no hipster would call them self "a hipster" with a straight face or sincerely, they would be laughing at themselves & making fun of the other ridiculous hipsters who are the bane of so many american cities.

williamsburg BK is almost un-visitable now because of out of town hipsters & thank god the lower east side still retains its proto-punk & bohemian/counter-culture roots otherwise the hipsters would have destroyed the LES' character too.
