Any Nylon Alternatives?

ok I guess I feel lost now..if you don't want to be sold a lifestyle, wasn't that the point of buying these mags in the first place...because you like their point of view..we first all loved Nylon for what they were selling us..now they are selling us crap..doesn't each mag represent its certain personality?

Obviously I haven't expressed myself well.:flower: A youth-oriented fashion magazine's role is to promote a certain aesthetic and culture, and a large part of it is based on selling or aiding to sell products; clothes, albums, movies, furniture, you name it. I don't have a problem with that, far from it. But I believe that there's a pushy and aggressive way to do it, and a fun, irreverent, yet respectful way to do it. In general, it's fine to commodify material objects, but not lifestyle choices. So a magazine that promotes not just fashion, but also home decor, travel ideas, relationship advice etc. is always treading a fine line between catering to its audiences' tastes, and pushing ideas down our throats. I really think that quality writing makes or breaks such a magazine. I hope that was clearer.

Ahh yes much clearer! And I certainly agree..where as we can see Vogue does that and Another magazine doesn't....I bought everyone's suggestions today on Ebay: Russh, Frankie, Follow...so when they get here we shall see how they compare..

I wish there was a Fantastic Man for women..something smart and modern that was about writing and people....ahh the old days of fashion mags

^ That's cool that you ordered them off Ebay. Tell me how you like Russh. I think it's similar to when The Face first started out and wasn't so pretentious.

You are so right. I do wish there was a fashion magazine out that I as a 22 year old could relate to. I think some of the British Mags are pretty good (ID, Dazed & Confused).

I HATE Nylon too! I bought the last one to read the article about the Kills and I didn't even read any of the other articles because they were all so smug. It seems like the message the magazine sends out to its readers is "I'm so much cooler than you so buy all the stuff I tell you to" Ick! (Actually this would be bearable if they were actually cool but in their London issue they kept on talking about Boombox like it was the newest coolest thing. Whatev!)

I think we are exaggerating a little. I decided to read up on Nylon from last year compared to now and dont really see a diff, but I agree the sub-culture factor is enough to make you puke. But as you mention, dont you think the UK alternatives like Lula, id and Dazed are too interview based and not really what we have grown to expect from a monthly fashion pub? Is there not a mag that is like Vogue but for the twenty-something set!??

I wish upon a star....

Another great alternative to Nylon is Frankie Australia.
It's filled with cute editorials and has an artistic twist!
oh yeah and I finally finished Frankie after buying it off Ebay last week..ATTENTION by no means is this a fashion magazine AT ALL but it is freakin fantastic as a general womens mag...very witty and best friend-ish..I would subscribe for sure :)

Lula is my favourite.

whats with nylon.. i cant put my finger on it, it's like it trys to be the 'indie/hip' mag. but it comes off as 'everyone listen to this music' and 'like these people' if that makes sense?

i feel like im a hypocrite though, im subscribed to it. it started off okay for me, like two years ago. but now.. askldjasdg.

The aesthetic of Russh is great... I love the collages, and some of their editorials are nice. But I do find it a bit of a borderline Nylon-esque wank! Frankie fashion is pretty terrible, although I do like some of the articles... I definitely want to get Lula! And I always read Teen Vogue in Borders:blush: I also ran across doingbird magazine recently and that seemed very interesting. Apparently its australian, but it has a very European flavour to it.

I love all of those also
russh
Frankie
Yen
Doing Bird
all from Australia
I buy all of these also
No magazine and 1 am magazines from down under also
i also love freebie mag vice to read
Others I buy are Purple mag
and lula also dazed,

Yes!
I used to think I was the only one who felt this way about NYLON...
I'm still searching though.. for the alternative. I like PAPER Magazine.
But I'm also starting to think I should forget about trying to find a replacement.
Other than that my bibles include; ArenaHomme+, L'OfficielHommes, VOGUE Homme Int'l, W, V, VMAN & VOGUE of course..
Don't know what is wrong with magazines these days, you never get exactly what you want.

i read that Paper sucks as well..that it was better in the 90s...seems like all magazines are losing their touch :(

I guess I'm the only one who subscribes to/likes Nylon. I can see why people think it is somewhat pretentious and these-dirty-and-drug-parties-are-so-cool-ish, but it has introduced me to a lot of new things.
One thing that is so obvious, though, is that the articles seem to never be proofed. There are so many spelling and grammar mistakes, that I'm surprised they even have a full staff.
