Dusk 'til Dawn
The Twilight franchise is being billed as the next Harry Potter, so actress Ashley Greene could be busy for a while.

It's midday in North Hollywood, and Ashley Greene, excitement pooling in her chestnut eyes, is in the front room of her apartment talking about what might just prove to be her big break. Twilight, the movie adaptation of the best-selling Stephanie Meyer book, about a coven of young vampires so keen to integrate themselves into everyday society that they become vegetarian in the hope of stemming their fleshly cravings.
"Back when I was auditioning for this," she says, sitting on her couch, "my manager told me that this had the potential to be the Big One, and encouraged me not to mess it up. I hope I haven't!"
She hadn't read the novel, "but I rushed out and got it, then read it in a day and a half. It's that kind of book: brilliant and un-put-down-able. I loved it, and I understood why it had such a fanbase. I was now a fan myself."
Green is 21 years old, and originally from Jacksonville, Florida. By becoming an actress, she says, she isn't following any familial impulse but rather is breaking out on her own.
"My dad has his own concrete business, and my mom..." Here she falters, a little "V" of uncertainty forming between her eyebrows. She calls into the kitchen where her mom, who happens to be visiting from Florida, is busy making coffee. "Hey, what's your job again?"
Her mother tells her that she works in insurances, and Green, suddenly seeming so much younger than her years, diligently repeats it. "Insurance, that's it. I forgot." She explains that although her brother had once wanted to give acting a try, he saw his younger sister run away with his dream, and so he gallantly stepped back.
Initially she fell into modeling, hated it, and started acting classes instead, relocating to Los Angeles at 17. But Hollywood, Greene readily admits, is a cutthroat place to live, where everyone chases the same goal. The never ending succession of auditions - out of five per week, she'd be lucky to land a single minor role a month - soon took its toll.
"I went through a stage where - well, you know, I was 20 and drinking and whatnot," she says, "But I deal with things better now. I refuse to cry over [failing auditions] because it's just not worth it. But I am extremely passionate about acting, so in many ways they are all a learning process for me. It is tough competing with so many other actors though."
Inevitably, she sees the same faces at every callback.
"Who am I up against?" She says. "Oh, everyone! I'm actually much more interested in the girl next door role than, say, the high school cheerleader. Unfortunately, Kristen Stewart [with whom she appears in Twilight] also goes up for very similar roles, and she is the one that seems to be getting them all at the moment, dammit! I guess it's because that is essentially what she is, the girl next door. And of course she is a really talented actress, but she's younger than me! What's that about?"
A lot is riding on this film for Greene. If it's a hit, then it's entirely likely that the other books in the series - which many are comparing to Harry Potter, because it appeals to both children and adults - will also be adapted. Given the very nature of vampires - specifically that undeniable human desire to drive a stake through their hearts - many of the characters in Twilight don't quite see it through to all four installments, but Greene's does. Which means she could be very busy for the next few years.
"I sure hope so," she beams. "That's the plan."
