Meet The Block’s cover model, 20-year-old Ashley Smith. She’s a gaptoothed ingenue who’s quickly risen to the top of the modeling business over the last two years, walking in shows for Balenciaga and Prada, appearing in campaigns for everyone from Diesel to Alexander Wang, and posing for Terry Richardson. We took a moment to ask the music-loving Texas beauty about her life outside modeling, what it’s like being compared to Lara Stone, and what’s inside her makeup bag.
The Block: What was your favourite part about growing up in Texas? Was modeling ever something you thought you would end up doing?
Ashley Smith: The warm weather, the awesome swimming holes, the barbecue and bonfire parties, and my small family and awesome Texas punk friends with their friendly Southern mentality were my favourites. I never thought of being a model when I was in Texas — I never even opened a Vogue or [any other] fashion magazine, but I had a bunch of people come through my line at the grocery store I worked at who would tell me I should be a model. I always thought it was a nice comment, but never thought of it seriously until my mother agency, Foreman Management, approached me at South by Southwest and asked me to try it out in New York.
TB: Where would you be and what would you be doing if you weren’t modeling?
AS: I would definitely still be in Austin, most likely going to college. I wanted to go to the Art Institute of Austin to study graphic design and web design. I’ve always been creative, and a visual learner, so I’ll be happy in life as long as I’m creating something and using my hands to tell a story.
TB: What are some of the most interesting and surprising observations you’ve made about the fashion industry?
AS: The fashion industry is such a wide spectrum of culture. I love the unexpected places that some of the fashion stories find their inspiration. I’m surprised at how much my personal style has evolved from the first day I started to model. This industry isn’t a 9-to-5 job… it’s a lifestyle.
TB: Your success has opened up many more doors and opportunities for you career-wise. Many models have begun other careers in acting, styling, designing, writing and making music. Do you have aspirations outside of modeling in the near future?
AS: My main inspiration in life is music. I could talk music for hours, and I’ve always wanted to make music, if not for a profession maybe just to jam and bond with creative people.
TB: Where do you see yourself in five years?
AS: Five years is a long time, and I have many goals, but I couldn’t tell you where I’ll be in a year. I live on impulse and quick decision-making skills, so in five years I just hope to be happy and a little bit more experienced.
TB: The gap between your teeth and your body type have drawn many comparisons to Lara Stone, and even Lauren Hutton. How do you feel about those comparisons?
AS: It’s great to be compared to famous icons! Hopefully it says a thing or two about my future success.
TB: With all the traveling, tight schedules and jet lag, how do you keep yourself energized and refreshed, both mentally and physically?
AS: I’m young. As simple as that.
