European Fashion Highlights in Bremen
In its "ausgeze!chnet. contemporary – european – fashion – awards" exhibition from the 17 June to the 16 October 2005, the Design Zentrum Bremen (Bremen Design Centre) presents the work of the recent winners of four renowned fashion design prizes. Venue for the event is the Wilhelm Wagenfeld House. As part of the above exhibition, the Design Centre also presents the European "contemporary fashion archive" project.
With designs created in Antwerp, Berlin, Bremen, Helsinki or London, the Design Zentrum Bremen shows top class exhibits from five European countries. The prize-winning collections of up-and-coming as well as established designers were chosen in a comprehensive selection
process and give visitors an insight into the future of the European fashion industry.
Fashion is not just a cultural phenomenon with its own codes of expression but is also a major industry of great economic weight. After the centre's recent exhibitions titled "Dieter Rams Design", "BraunPreis 2003" and "simply droog", the current event focuses once more on therelevance and potential of creative disciplines. By bringing award-winning collections to the city, the Design Zentrum Bremen hopes to inspire other disciplines: The curator Joachim Schirrmacher emphasises that fashion is not only fashion, as it has developed into one of the most potent media of everyday culture, influencing the design strategies in other fields, be it architecture, industrial and car design, photography and graphics.
Apart from women's fashion and sportswear, the exhibition also includes menswear. ForExample by Raf Simons, the Belgian designer who was recently promoted to the creative director by Jil Sander. For the winner of the "Swiss Textiles Award", clothing is not only an expression of culture but also reflects political influences.
The exhibition also includes the award-winning collection of c.neeon, the label of the designer team of Clara Kraetsch and Doreen Schulz from Berlin. They recently won the Grand Prix for best collection at the prestigious Festival International de Mode et de Photographie à Hyères in France.
Another up-and-coming designer is Kristina Schneider. Inspired by Coco Chanel – who once said that a confident woman does not try to smother the difference between women and men but rather emphasises it – Kristina Schneider took a most masculine piece of clothing, namely a jacket, and turned it into excitingly feminine garments, thanks to excellent needlework and a polished cut technique.
In line with other prize winners represented in this exhibition who have already produced designs for well-established fashion houses (Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney etc.), Kristina Schneider is about to join the design team of Akris in St. Gall, Switzerland.

The exhibition marks the start of a series of events dedicated to fashion to be held this year in Bremen. Across the road from the Wilhelm Wagenfeld House, the Kunsthalle Bremen will open its exhibition "Monet and Camille - Portraits of Women in Impressionism" in mid-October. The event will also include fashion illustrations and historic couture dresses. From the 4 to the 6 November 2005, the University of the Arts Bremen and the Kunsthalle Bremen will host a symposium on the topic of “mode | körper | kult” (fashion | body | cult).
