Paris - Christopher Bailey, creative director of Burberry, has won the coveted Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards 2005.
Bailey was among the many leading British fashion names honored at Thursday's gala dinner, staged in the Raphael Room of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Actress Emilia Fox hosted the ceremony, the "Oscars" of the British fashion industry. Among the other winners were New Designer Duro Olowu, presented by Laura Bailey, Menswear Designer Carlo Brandelli, who received his prize from Will Young.
Charlotte Tilbury, the hot new British beauty specialist, won Fashion Creator, presented by local lovely Saffron Aldridge.
Frenchman Roland Mouret nabbed the Red Carpet Designer, while Karen Elson picked up Model of the Year.
John Galliano's favorite hatter Stephen Jones was presented Accessory Designer of the Year by model Liberty Ross, and Dover Street Market, the retail brainchild of Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo, took home the Shop of the Year prize.
However, the most popular winner was probably Suzy Menkes, OBE. Alexander McQueen presented the International Herald Tribune fashion editor with the V&A Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion.
The press committee of the British Fashion Council, the UK's governing fashion body, organizes nominees and categories for the awards. The rotating judging panel this year included British Vogue editor-in-chief Alexander Shulman, Natalie Massenet of net-a-porter.com and Yasmin Sewell of Browns.
