Balenciaga F/W 2016.17 Paris

Didn't expect this. It is quite decent. :ninja:

I thought this was one of those debuts that really felt like a fashion moment. Leaving appart my personal tastes, I have to recognize this was good. There is nothing groundbreaking, everything has been done, there is nothing new; but there is fashion energy in this show, I think that's undeniable.
After Wang, it's not that difficult to make something that feels like a fashion moment...

 Funnily enough, I was going to write something like that, but didn't want to sound b!tchy cause I sort of enjoyed it.

I think Wang's mediocrity was sort of useful: he was used like a lemon liquid sorbet, just to clean the paladar after a strong meal (Ghesquière) so there is place for something new (the Vetements guy).

Well after Alexander Wang I'm welcoming any kind of change. I'm a little dissatisfied with this collection, yet I understand that it's his first outing for the brand. I would've liked to see him do something way off, like kind of what John did for Dior during those crazy years. Not paying any homage to the "noble Cristobal..." etc. Sometimes one needs to go way off the tracks to then find your path back again.

Awful. Who would want to wear this and really feel good about how they look? Oh and the casting left much to be desired.

Another thing I came to think of was the fact that he doesn't design for the Kardashians or Wintour etc. he's vision is unique. May he never start designing for celebrities.

I don't understand the hating against Alexander Wang's work at Balenciaga, at least he knew how to deliver a thought-out 'product', something that I am completely missing from this runway collection. Mind you, we haven't seen the pre-collection but I don't see what exactly it is they want to sell like hot cake from this collection? Where he goes in the territory of sculptural tailoring, his attempts look matronly and heavy at best.

This is THE BEST thing I've seen this season. Its AMAZING.

I've revisited Wang's collections, his collections weren't bad, maybe the last one was too boring but the rest was good.

Anyway, the press started to speak about Demna's creations ( OMG, it is horrible, it is parody of several real Looks, it could be interesting to see- but not to wear- on Vetements Show -but Demna did it for Balenciaga :woot: )

Balenciaga

The Shape of Things to Come

Demna Gvasalia channels the perfect form of the grand master Cristobal Balenciaga.

That interview for bof makes full sense with this, not vetements whatsoever. This looks pretty good to me, I like how he's glued to the idea of women on the street wearing his clothes (and I say glued meaning this approach completely backfires at vetements) because even the most ambitious piece here still has that, it doesn't look strictly luxurious or for the unattainable, sitting pretty clientele, but still special even though it's an extension of some mundame garment (jeans, puffy jacket, etc). A bit like what Hedi has attempted to do with ridiculous results (excellent quality, sure, but design-wise no thanks).

#BalenciagaSoWhite.

In all seriousness, the casting is really shocking. Even the Oscars had more diversity compared to what we are seeing here. Not a good way to start!

And that's just the model casting, the collection itself is just as disappointing. There isn't a single piece I actually like! Very sad, Balenciaga always used to be one of my favourite houses.

Aside from the floral pieces which I really really hate, the rest is nice, some sporty looks look cool and very wearable. The coats are lovely too,

The jackets kinda remind me of Raf's version of bar jacket at his first Dior show.

This is just Vetements Premiere. It's what he'd do with his own label if they had the injection of cash that Baleciaga afforded him.

I understand that a designer wants to put their own mark on a the lable, but why does this have to look just like his own brand? Even the casting and styling? Vetements is proving to be a one hit wonder, but I feel terrible that he gets to drag Balenciaga into this mess.
I don't know who had a hand in getting him this job (Anna?? Kanye??).

On the plus side; there are a few good pieces in the mix that will likely stand their ground at retail. But I don't see the client who will buy this. I bet he'll mix in a healthy street style assortment of hoodies and t-shirts in some crazy BALENCIAGA font to bring in piles of cash and then we'll read "sales are up at Balenciaga", thus deeming this a success.

:(

Right.
It is Vetements with Balenciaga Label and Balenciaga Money.
Gvasalia is a clever boy, in case it would go bad with Balenciaga he made a perfect promotion for his own brand.
Who has not 2000-3000 euro /Dollars for Balenciaga item will pay 800 -1000 for Vetements to wear from Demna Gvasalia
Sorry but it is overpriced, i don't know who pays 1000 euro for Vetements Jeans or 850 euro for minirock or 250 for t-shirt? Not me, i'll never going to wear it. And sure there are many better items to buy for this money. Margiela by Galliano is not so expensive as this Vetements.

this made me sigh a whiff of relieve! it isn't so bad isn't it? I was afraid how is he going to interpret Balenciaga, but surprisingly it looks at least `pretty` for most looks.

I like how modern he interprets some of the down jackets although it could be the styling but at least the colour makes them interesting, and nice proportions as well.

He made a parody for the real Looks, not all but most of them. Behind many looks are real womens from streets. He simply choosed the most ugly persons from the streets, all tbhis remaked it a-lá´"fashionable Vetements" tailored pieces
And the casting is terrible because it is part of the game.
If he put this horror on the real beautiful models it would not work.
There is nothing similar to Hedi Slimane. IMO.

@Vetements,
i don't think he tried to interpet Balenciaga. He did what he can. I didn't see any re-interpetation of Cristobal Balenciaga there, i see only re-interpretation of his own Vetements. IMO

wouldn't say IMO, there just isn't, the mention was about approach, not actual looks or aesthetics.

Not sure whether you're talking about vetements or balenciaga.. I mean, you're saying 'this', the casting here is pretty standard, all "real beautiful models". I wouldn't exactly call his friends or whatever they are at vetements the ugliest.. just maybe not the lankiest.

I always crop off the faces while scrolling down though so I don't pay that much attention to that, I also don't think I have that much difficulty imagining myself in something and concluding whether it's the kind of garment I'd just have to laugh at or seriously consider. Whether it's a real person or a model has little effect on me..

I like this a lot even though it feels like Vetements 2.0 (like their collection was the pre-collection and this being the main one). Nonetheless, a very good first attempt. It remains to be seen whether this is all we can expect; a predictable image, or if he'd truly explore the archives and surprise us each season.

Cold and joyless. Another case where I seriously wonder what the critics are smoking.

Hopefully by next season there will be a more diverse cast...

My thought exactly. I expected it to be horrid and awkward, but it can't even get that much emotion out of me for me to dislike it in that sense. It's depressing, cold, boring. It's not even hideous, it just lacks sexiness so badly. There is absolutely nothing exciting, interesting or fun here. Blah -_-

i either loved or hated wang's stuff but it was damn better than this. i would take him back right now so we dont have to get any more of this :rolleye:
