I my Birks! Though it doesn't make a fashion statement where I am. Have they become passe in the U.S.? I'm thinking about buying a new pair for the warmer months this Spring. Beside my Milanos, any recommendations? What does everyone think about the Zurich (in suede)?

Good bump! I had some Birkenstock look-alikes that were fabulous back in high school. I miss them.

I will hopefully post a picture of them because they are fantastic enough for me to want to see them again.

I own several Birkenstocks but wearing them without socks is really painful because of the material. Do you know how I could get them softer?

^I can't say that I have that problem, thankfully. They do sell Birks with the soft footbed. I do have a pair of Milanos that have the soft footbed - which provides excellent cushioning, but I can tell the difference between it and the normal footbed, because I'm used to how that feels under my sole, and it feels hrm..."squishy" under my arch, but outside of that they're fine.

i prefer birkenstocks on men since i hate seeing sandals (very old mannish) or rubber flipflops (sloppy sloppy sloppy) on men. so for guys birkenstocks are a good alternative, to me anyway.

i feel like i'm wearing mini-boats on my feet when i'm in mine. i think they're ugly and clunky but they're comfy. however i feel totally unwomanly when i'm in them (i have tan and white gizehs). it's a love-hate relationship i think.

I last owned Birkenstocks when I was like eight years old I would never have imagined them as fahionable. Actually I still don't. Comfy? Yes. Fashion statement? No. Really, this surprises me.

they certainly make a fashion statement. i have yet to find a nicer pair of all leather sandals that are comfortable for the warmer weather, though. and i'd rather wear birks over driving shoes, loafers and boat shoes like any other non-sandal wearing men. unfortunately for warmer weather dressy events, though, i become one of those other non-sandal wearing men.

yeah i used to have those in blk patent

but i want to get the classic ones. is there a version with a less thick looking sole? not that it matters too much but i'd like a sleeker kind instead of the lesbionic looking look.

i think that sole is birkenstock's design. it makes for easier repairs/replacement over time. i'm sure if you asked they might be able to alter it slightly to your liking

Many of you may have gathered at this point (from some of my references), that I am a little hippie girl wrapped up in a fashion bow. I spent my teenage summers in Grateful Dead parking lots and twirling at the shows to a little Scarlet Fire or Franklin’s Tower. Birkenstocks were, of course, a staple.

I haven’t worn them in a very long time, opting for Havaianas or ballet flats when I’m not in heels.



The thing is I have some serious foot problems. As in, I get stress fractures on a regular basis. Seriously, I was once on crutches three times in twelve months. Other than the fact that I decked them out in vintage scarves, the situation was not cute.



I’m in need of flat summer shoes that offer me some actual arch support. It’s the flats that kill me more than my heels, probably because I walk around the city in them for hours.



Re-enter the Birks. They’re created to give proper support to the heel and the arch. And I think this patent pair looks kinda jazzy, for a Birkenstock. Of course, I know any pair, especially the originals, will work with my hippie garb. But can I wear these on a regular basis without looking too Summer of Love? Do you guys know of other cute warm weather pairs that are also foot-friendly?



I can’t do crutches or the boot again. I just can’t.

I have a silver pair in the same style that I adore. Although they do make my legs look stumpy, so I usually wear them with jeans.
