Black Lipstick/Lipgloss

I have a friend who is really blonde and her black lipstick (and/or gloss) suits her SO well that it's ridiculous. Yes, she is incredibly stylish overall, but the contrast of the really blonde hair and the black lipstick is a really strong look that, if worn with confidence, looks amazing.

I think black lipstick can be amazing as long as theres red, purple, or blue undertones to them and is probably more flattering to skin tones than pure black. Pure black... can be a little too much, although there are probably people out there who can pull it off.

I just bought MAC's cyber lipstick as my deep dark alterntive and I'm in love, although I am still looking for something darker...:innocent:

oooh I love it!!! i gotta get one! I used to have one blue that usually shock people a bit but this black is totally awesome!!!:woot::D

thanks for the link Street_a_Licious i need to get it!!! yay!:P

I bought the Chanel blue/purple lipstick yesterday. I absolutely LOVE IT! It's the most beautiful thing i've ever owned...I recommend it to everyone.

I can't wait for the Chanel Noirs Obscure collection. I would love to experiment and wear this look for a week and see what happens.

It's already in store now... Here at my place it's already sold out! Really love le Vernis Vendetta and Diabolic, and the black/purple Rouge Allure!

I'm reviving this thread since I was about to make a new post on it... What about any street style or IRL photos of girls actually pulling this off, now that it's 'been a trend' for a little while?

In theory i LOVE THIS SO MUCH but I'm pale with red hair and dress in gothy black all the time anyhow, and it always just looks too extreme. There's so many obnoxious women's magazine articles about it and so many great eds featuring it, but it's just hard to find it IRL. Have any of you pulled it off or have any non-ad/ed/runway photos of it working well?

I've always loved dark purple lipstick... but I'm not too keen on black. I guess it has to be done right, and on the right person. I don't think it's for everyone.

MAC has (better) substitutes for the dark red and dark purple shade. Media (red) and Cyber (purple) lipstick, both are more opaque and permanent

I don't think you'll ever see black lipstick on real streetstyle pics (non modesl/fashion people) as it might be a trend amongst the fashion conscious, but not for mainstream people, which are obviously the majority. they'll only think of it was goth/weird

pictures below are my own. the black one is a sephora lip laquer from ages ago, on black eye liner. second one is mac media with a dark and dense lipgloss on top

It looks really good on some people, how good can depend on skin tone, hair color, all the obvious stuff.

I wear my Mac Style Black lippy every single time I go to work. I absolutely love it! I have the Chanel blue black too, and all the black lipglosses. I think it helps that I am extremely pale with bright bright orange hair.

I totally take back my statement about needing certain undertones for it too look good. I tried on Black Knight by MAC and it was fierce... Like everyone else already said, you just need the attitude and confidence to wear it.

But damn, its hot.

My boyfriend says I should give it a go, that I'd look good with black lips (and he isn't a goth or anything! Lol!), but, although I really want to try that new Mac gloss, I'm somehow scared by it. It may be because I dress in black most of the time and I don't want to look like a goth (I had enough of that in my teens, lol!).

this is me too, hahahaha. i bought Mac in Film Noir (a very very very deep black-toned matte red lipstick) and it looks SO HOT but i just can't muster up the confidence to wear it out. gah.

The mac gloss is so sheer it's barely worth worrying about. The Cremesheen black is pretty light too. I don't know why you'd feel fear about it, the idea is to wear it with a bare face and a little mascara, no goth wears make it like that, it'll just look cool!

I'm so glad I bought the original YSL black lipgloss. It's incredibly opaque and shines like PVC. Tomorrow I shall wear it with my black mattene from mac. Yes!

Mindbear, could you share some pix of it with us?? would love to see!

Temptalia has a review on black and dark lipsticks from MAC here. I personally think Shu Uemura's black lipstick works the best. My friend bought one for halloween!

i agree with this. i ended up doing black lips for halloween and i thought they looked quite cool. i think the key is to keep everything else sleek to keep the look chic, not costume-y. i have a few events later this week and i plan on doing a low tight chignon, vanilla on my eyes with mascara and the black lip. i am just using chapstick and my black MAC greasepaint because it's too thick to wear on my eyes and i have terrible smuding with it.

if i learned one lesson about black lipstick saturday night it's that q-tips are a godsend! use them to clean up the edges for a really pristine, poised lip.

Not many people can carry black lipstick well.

Only a few people have the certain look of pulling it off well.

The darkest I ever wear is dark purple, chocolate brown, or dark burgundy.

I'd do black lipstick if I find a decent black lipstick and find the right occasion for it.
