M is for Marie Antoinette
Azeem Khan’s collection was inspired by France’s tragic queen, an apt muse for the so-called “King of Crystal” who has dressed Hollywood stars such as Demi Moore and Sharon Stone. Khan is a graduate of FIT and Parson’s, and he spent time working with Geoffrey Beene, but you’d never know it from his clothes—the designer’s maximalist fall collection would more likely make Elie Saab proud.

Q is for Queenie Dodi
There’s no mincing words when it comes to the title of the local society magazine, Mumbai’s Beautiful People. Few are better suited to its pages than the former Miss India, Queenie Dodi. A major player on the scene, it was this ex-model and her husband Raja who introduced Vikram Chatwal to his ex-model bride, Priya Sachdev.

S is for Sabyasashi Mukherjee
Sabyasashi—rhymes with Versace—Mukherjee produced the crossover collection of the week. Dubbed “The Snail” and made from quilted velvets, mud-dyed fabrics, and individually sewn beads, it was the calm in a storm of ornamentation. Brown's in London stocks the line and Tracey Ross picked it up for her L.A. boutique.

T is for Tradition
“Eight yards of heaven” is how one observer described the sari, the most popular garment shown at LFW. Although Beri, Soni, and Mukherjee are determined to gain global recognition, for other Indian designers there’s no place like home. “For me,” said golden boy Manish Malhotra, “it’s not about wooing international buyers. I want to concentrate on selling to my retailers here.”

After a six-year absence, Tom Ford’s favorite, Ujjwala Raut, was a welcome sight on Mumbai’s catwalks. A new mother, she was in town with her three-month-old baby girl, Ksha, and model husband Craig Maxwell Sterry.

Shah Rukh Khan was there with wife Gauri. And directors Karan Johar (second from right) and Farhan Akhtar (right) seemed to be having a good time.
