Books and their homes....

I used to occasionally get rid of the books that I had finished reading unless I really loved them; but this thread has inspired me to keep ALL of my books and have many, many, many, shelves and stacks of them.

This thread has really inspired me to decorate my house with books. I now have them scattered everywhere- a few on my dresser, some on my coffee table, some on the hallway entryway table, cookbooks on top of my kitchen cabinets... It makes the house feel more personal.

Does anyone put covers on their books? I have some books with unattractive covers for displaying purposes, and I thought I might cover them with some pretty paper I have.

^ I think book covers look good; I am not remotely disciplined enough to do that

I've been clearing out books that are no longer relevant lately ...

^ Yes, I recently donated a bunch of them to the local library.

I have to constantly "weed" my library. Usually I'll keep all non-fiction books indefinately but will donate about half of the fiction I read each year. Our local "friends of the library" love me.

^ I think I'll give mine to the library too then  I wonder if they'd forgive my latest fine in exchange for a generous donation

One thing I did was weed out fiction (well, non-fiction too) that I felt had a negative message. Also some college textbooks (it's been a long time ). Out with the books I've been given that I never liked ... out with depressing books ... out with the boring ...

i love these old-school ones

Me too. Reminds me of my own bookshelf, which is currently overflowing with books. Perhaps I'll look at this thread for inspiration for a new shelf.

^ Just thought I'd mention that according to Peter Walsh's It's All Too Much, the appropriate solution is to prune the book collection to fit the shelves  In looking at my own books, this appears to be perfectly possible to do ...

^^that's definitely a good solution...
i have my fair share of books i KNOW i will never read again..
if i didn't like it the first time then unless it's a classic, chances are it won't be getting any better :P

this one is called the "bookworm"
it's designed by ron arad and made by kartell-
the concept is that you order the shelf in the length and # of bookends that you want, then assemble it yourself into any shape you want (except no right angles or sharp curves...)

oh, i want one so bad....! what a great way to add some personality to a room.
they also come in more colors than shown here...

Here's a neat library in an attic of a Dutch townhouse:

Mr. Moser said they did little to the 250-square meter, or 2,690-square-foot, house -- but they did create a library and music room out of the original attic on the fifth floor.
